Ongoing engine rattle and poor indi service.
« on: 31 July 2013, 21:39 »
Have had a problem with my 2010 gti for a little while but have had limited time available to get it looked at.
Basically it sounds like this -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeh_RObli-0

If I rev to about 2000rpm then take my foot off, there is an audible rattle of sorts, and the sound of air escaping along with a misfire of sorts. Under load I can hear it and the car is running a little rough. Coasting down a hill will produce a similar noise. Basically something isn't right and my first guess was loose cat, or turbo, or exhaust etc as thats pretty much where the sound is coming from. Car hasnt used any water or oil, doesn't run hot, hasnt jumped in mpg and cruises nicely.

Took it to an indi today (Motor Continental in Crouch End, London) who had the car for 7 hours and didn't manage to do anything more than put it on vag-com which threw up no error codes. I did expect to pick it up today all fixed but come 6 o'clock I found myself having to literally run to the garage to go grab it before they closed and they planned on keeping it overnight and hadn't called me to come collect it. I was unimpressed, paid the £41 for whatever and got my keys.
The chap at the garage then spent some time guessing what was wrong with it (by now 630pm) deciding he thought it was the timing chain. I'd been waiting for him to drop that on me knowing full well its one of the most laborious and expensive things to do, his estimation was that would be £1100 + VAT :)

Car has 41k on it and hasn't been ragged. I'm going to stick to my original plan and take it miles and miles away to Russell Automotive. I should have not bothered with anyone else.

In the meantime can anyone throw their 2c into the discussion as to what they think it might be?

Have you tried a main dealer?

Hard to say what that 'chatter' is in the video.

Does it rattle as you first start it. If so could be chain tensioner. If the timing had jumped it would be flagged by vagcom so could just be a tensioner replacment.
The hiss sounds like a failed diverter valve did they check it?

Both things ive discussed in length on here before.

Sorry but its hard to give a diagnosis without seeing and hearing the car myself.
Can you not get someone to rev it while you pinpoint the source of the noise?

Funnily enough I visited my main dealer (Alan Day Southgate) and that completely put me off taking the car back to get it looked at by their mechanics. It's a big busy dealer and they never got back to me with a quote for a couple other things. It sounds odd but I didn't get a good vibe from the people I spoke to there so I just didn't go back.

It doesn't rattle when you start it. Only once you rev it.

The indi I was at today didn't check a damn thing other than fault codes, which there was none. The guy I spoke to said he'd tried it at idle, and heard nothing so then he'd driven it around for 'much longer than usual' and didn't hear anything either which means he's either completely deaf or had to radio turned up. Actually the radio was on Capital when I got in the car (which I don't even have as a preset) and was half way up!

Has to make you laugh though. I'm abroad most of the week so this was my 1 day to get it sorted before leaving again, nice of them to hang onto my car for 7 hours and do nothing much more check it for fault codes

Chains often rattle on start up if loose but maybe yours isnt that.
Your oil level is at max isnt it?
Get someone to rev it use a tube maybe a kitchen foil tube or something and listen against the cam cover.

I would still check diverter valve as I think I can hear it in the video.
3 screws and a plug to remove it but you need to be underneath.

You sure this isnt the common rattle problem with the heat shield over the exhaust, I have seen loads of people with this.

Get someone to rev it and you hold or jar something to hold it in place, it usually rattles near the DP or Cat.

the heat shield vibration cause a very similar rattle to that.......

If it wasn't wheezing somewhat as the revs reduce I'd buy that, but it kinda does a little misfire of sorts.
Thanks for the suggestions, I really need to get under it I think. I was kinda assuming thats what the bloody garage I took it to were going to do today, jokers.

Maybe it's something to do with this Soundaktor device?

Not sure if fitted on this year, anyone know?

Common component failures on the mk6 GTI that could causes a misfire or stutter.
. Diverter valve split.
. Spark plug issue.
. Coil pack breaking down.
. High pressure fuel pump failure.
. Crankcase ventilation valve issue.
. Cam timing jumped.
