Cam Chain Tensioner

FANTASTIC. 4 days after I give the golf some TLC and spend £270 on a full service & cam cover gasket change what does it do?

Thats right! Starts sounding like a diesel on idle.  :undecided:

Took it to the garage and we both reckon its the hydraulic cam chain tensioner. (Note, this has nothing to do with the cambelt/tensioner).

I've read it could be due to low oil pressure from sludge build up? I'm literally unable to afford the new tensioner priced at 280 quid from VW and all the work involved, so if anybody likes doing favors in return for what little cash I can offer you, get in touch!

Otherwise, any advice would be fantastic.

I would start by checking the oil pump pick up pipe, sounds like it is blocked.

sounds kinda suspicious to me. a few days after they had engine open it starts rattling. possibly knocked a lump of sludge down oil return channel when they were cleaning gasket face. just a thought mind.

Thanks guys, in the garage as we speak (type) getting an oil pressure test. I carefully hinted about the possibility of the rocker cover gasket change being the reason for the issue. The mechanic seemed to agree to a point. I'm fairly sure it's their fault, as I had no symptoms until 2 hours after I picked up the car and got the engine warm.

just replaced my tensioner.one of my plastic guides had broke.bought a gsf one and fitted it myself.all is fine and running and sounding better than ever.check the guides on the tensioner.

Turns out when the engine was hot, I had a mere 0.5bar of pressure in the oil. The VW recommended level is 3-4 I think. So I'm having a new pump/pickup fitted. Still costing me around £300 though  :sad:

That is low, are they sure the oil pump is in trouble, might just be the pick up pipe blocked.

are they not going to check the pick up gauze first? I would demand they check the gauze first. after all. there is a chance they could have cause the problem.
