Starting issue mk4 golf gti 2.0
« on: 28 July 2013, 15:01 »
I'm having an issue with my 2.0 gti,
So this morning I fired the engine up and used the cigarette lighter to use a tyre inflator
This went fine after this I took it out for a 10 min drive.
When I arrived back home I turned the engine off. Then when I tried to start it back up again there was nothing. Not even trying to fire up no clicking sound no nothing nothing happens. The battery is fine I charged it up a few days ago. I have dash board lights and can use the stereo etc so it's not the battery.
I did notice the abs light was on before I turned it off.
Also the "check alternator" light is on and I can't remember if that comes on but goes off when you fire the engine up.
I have very very low fuel so was also wondering if this could be the problem??
Any advise wuld be much appreciated.

Thanks mike.

Sounds to me like the alternator isn't charging,.youve used last of the juice in the battery to start it last time, and now the battery hasn't enough to start it now, the radio doesn't really take much power up, so that's why that is working..my suggestion is, try jump start the car, get it running, then put a multimeter on the battery to what the voltage is, should be around 11-14v if I remember rightly, any less than that, the alternator isn't charging the battery.

Alternators aren't that expensive and you should be able to fit yourself with minimum DIY skills.

Hope this helps
