Whatever you do don't just leave it. Get a jack and blocks and support the engine asap.

You'll need a new mount and fixings. Though I'd be more worried that something else has been shagged because it was driven.

I'd check the driveshafts, belts, hoses and the other mounts at least. I'm also really surprised you didn't lose the servo assist when the engine dropped.

How long ago was the belt changed?

This same thing happened to me last year however as soon as it happened I turned my engine off and got the car recovered with me my engine mount snapped and the bolts snapped in the block cost me £700 to have the bolts drilled out and a new mount put on with warrenty.

The whine happened as well it will be your snapped mount leaning on your cam belt.

I have never in my life heard of something like that happening. it really makes you question vags ability to do anything right lately. their reputation for good quality is really taking a tumble.

Sorted. Kinda.. got 2 bolts in as the actual bits snapped off the block for the 3rd.. BUT sumps cracked where it hit the floor... ideally needs alloy welding but will chemical metal do for now?
