Is the DSG box on the Golf that bad & frustrating?.... I've only tested the DSG on a Mk7 GT and didn't have a problem with it, but maybe I should've tried the auto on the GTi before committing to it....

I'm getting that sinking feeling I should have stuck with the 'Manual'....  :undecided:

I've never had a DSG but I did drive a mk6 GTI with it and I thought it was excellent, really smooth and responsive. Only criticism would be in Sport mode (where I'd want it all the time) it red lines each gear - but then if you use the paddles you can avoid that. Personally I prefer a manual car as I'm a purist, but if VW only made a DSG GTI I wouldn't give two hoots as I was very impressed (in fact if I change to an R I may well go DSG).

They are talking absolute sh!te, I have had 5 gti's and r32 and everyone had a dsg. They are amazing to drive and far better than any sh!tty bmw or mercedes autos I have had by a country miles. More bullsh!t from people that know nothing about cars. I remapped them all and the gearbox was superb. The mercedes and bmw had problems with gearbox after I got them remapped.

Thanks for the feedback Bud! I only went with the DSG as I fancied a change, although many thought I was mad & should have stuck with the manual.

I just remember once, Steve Sutcliffe from Autocar saying the DSG was the best thing since sliced bread. However now I've come to realise that you can't believe a word they say.

Do these "journalists" actually know what they're talking about??

I think that's the point. I would never describe them as journalists. Someone like Georg Karcher from Car magazine is though...

Well said, my very first/ish post was CAR mags Georg Karcher and his very, very early GTI mk7 review.

What Car/Autocar is the same piss poor 'sister' publications

TBH - It's a piss in the wind for these 'car' writers, MOST know diddly sh!t  until their next freebie drive

My personal view is that if you want an automated manual the DSG is as good as you can get.  I think it is a great bit of Tec if you do a lot of town driving and then also like some fun, but honestly for £1600 or whatever it costs, the manual Box in the mk7 is superb and I found I got bored using the paddles even on a test drive and just shoved it into auto.

I still prefer the feel of a good manual box especially when a car has a huge torque band because you can just control it so much better.   I decided my money was better spent on the PP and sunroof, but each to their own.

It's all about opinion at the end of the day. We spec the car the way we see fit and what we believe will give us most pleasure whether it be on looks, Santiagos & pano roof or convenience, DSG or even performance, PP, DCC etc.

We all have different wants/desires. I only wish my budget could have stretched to a few more toys

I drove the MK7 GTI DSG (and the manual too). The DSG is sublime. So that's what I ordered.

Now I know why I never buy what car mag.

Just read the test briefly, what utter tosh !

" the m135 will cost less than £1000 per year more than the golf to run". Utter bollo***. The pcp payments alone were 150 a month more than the Golf and the future value lower.

It also says the bmw fuel economy was better than the golf !??  How were they driving it..

Stick to testing 1.2 fiestas and clio's what car !! Leave the performance car tests to Evo.

Evo boys are nutters too though.  If a car does something well then it lacks "personality", if it has room for improvement then "personality" is forgotten and its not good enough.

Basically they want every car to be refined to perfection, but as soon as something is they moan about how they loved the good old days when taking a corner a little fast would leave you glad to still be alive and there was a significant chance a wheel might fall off at any moment and disappear off into the distance.  The net result is every car ends up with 4/5 and a conclusion that reads "good, but missing something."

Same with Top Gear, you must own an Alfa, even though they will then spend the next 5 minutes reeling off a list of Alfa facts most of which should lead a sane person to stay well clear of them.  Its all very well for these reviewers to talk about "exciting" cars because they don't have to invest a significant amount of their own money and if it should go pop its not like that is going to affect their work like it would if oen of us failed to meet a sales appointment or something.

I'm also fed up of how mags describe each and every element in detail and for each one conclude "good" or "not as good as" because this really tells me nothing at all.  I honestly get 100x as much useful information from a 100 word post by one of you guys compared to a 5000 word article by these mags.
