need advice on lambda sensor removal and cleaning

I am fed up with poor mpg as i am getting less than 300miles to the tank now
and still rough idling. I don't have any fault codes coming up so will try to replace/clean the following in this order:

1.coilpack-(even though i did this a year and a half ago)
2. Temp sensor-again done in the past
3. Remove and clean lambda.

The first two I have done in the past but not the last one.
I have read up on the lambda so here is a summary.

Spray with lithium grease spray.
Try to get it off with a 22mm spanner.
soak in motor oil overnight
copperslip
put back in


I've seen clips where they heat it with a torch, but I don't have one handy.
I am really hoping one of the first two solves my problem. Please give any pointers on removing the lambda. i've got no fault codes with it but am at wits end about how to solve this persisting problem.

Put spanner on straight. Give it a go.

Never had an issue on a VW lambda. Everytime just come straight out no hassle.

you must be superman as i couldn't get the spanner on at first-tried 22mm, 23mm and a spanner manufactured by "KING DICK" (i kid you not) here in Britain (where else could they be made?) size 5/8,11/16 end. I could not get the 22 or 23mm around the bottom of the sensor and the KD got around it but there was no room to move at all. Did you use a special tool or something???(the other end of the spanner was in the brake lines) . stuck  again...

When I did mine I dropped the exhaust system to do it .I also used a 22mm ring spanner with a cut in it for the wires to pass through.

like vw couldn't have put it in a better place-they really don't understand the concept of simple. Just like the thermostat-a totally easy job on other cars made difficult by vw. I have a feeling I will need to use a torch to get this off. I am close to giving up on this one...
