selling second hand tyres
« on: 18 July 2013, 23:36 »
Today I had it pointed out to me by a local Trading standards Officer (somebody had complained about my ad in a local paper) that it is illegal to sell second hand tyres!

http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/advice/advice-business-sfsum17.cfm

Apparently this also applies when you sell them on rims

I knew about traders supplying part worns but had no idea it applied to Joe Public as well

if you sell a car you are (just about) OK as long as you don't use the tyres as a selling point (such as 'new tyres fitted 3 weeks ago) and you recommend to the buyer that they replace the tyres as soon as possible.

The main thrust of the law is that only people licenced to sell part worns can sell tyres that have all the required documentation.

it seems to be one of those things that Trading Standards leave alone until somebody complains and I have to admit it isn't something I'd given any thought to but when you stop and think for a minute, the only thing keeping you on the road is a few square inches of rubber - why would you trust your average ebay seller to describe them honestly :)

Reading that link it says it is illegal to sell part worn tyres UNLESS certain criteria are met. So surely meet the criteria and its legal to sell?

The criteria being that you are a registered business and only sell properly marked (and presumably tested) 'part worn'.

I'm guessing that taking your tyres off the rims and selling them isn't meeting those criteria :)

it didn't stop me selling mine but it was pointed out to me that what I did was illegal - it seems to be one of those stupid laws that only gets enforced when Trading Standards receive a complaint.

TBH  i don't understand all the fuss over S/H tyers

tyers are sriously tough things,  puting an obviously damaged tyer on is a really stupid idea but a tyer that less than a year old with lots of tread and no damage or repairs i have no proble with.

I've had more problems with new budget  tyers over the years,   i've had a frount and rear blow out at the same time going round a roundabout on tyers less than a day old.   and quite a few delaminate or deform.

the trailer seems to manage to rip the hell out the plys so they deform in some really funky ways.   or give me a set of margoni zetas on hatch back with more than 100 bhp and can make them fall apart on demand pritty much on van they are letahal if theres any weight in there
all the VW's have gone bar 1.
