You have a container of open fuel on the passenger seat? You're gunna have to be more specific about when the smell comes in.

It's a sort of fumey smell like the exhaust when rev it

hey it could be oil fumes from engine your smelling.

Check the fuel lines. They are known to weep/crack.
shouldn't have strong fuel or exhaust smells. Just the usual oily smell you get in every mk2.

Check breather pipes on the engine.
