My partner has a mk4 golf gti when he changes gear the gears grind slightly. When sat in traffic he puts the clutch right in (flat to the floor) and in 1st gear, even with the clutch flat to the floor the car shakes where you can feel the clutch starting to bite. When he takes the car out of gear the shaking stops. Reverse always grinds. He has changed the master cylinder and the fluid. Does anyone have any idea what it could be the car runs fine apart from this problem????

slack clutch cable? may be the reason for the grinding as the plates arent fully disconnected especially if the pedals on the floor. has he checked the plates themselves for any sign of wear and tear?

He has a hydrologic clutch.  We bled the clutch and now there are no air bubbles but it's still grinding and biting with your foot flat to the floor?? Any suggestions

Hate to say this but it could be the selector shaft within your in gearbox. My other half had exactly the same problem on her A3 fitted with AUM engine and gearbox. Turns out the selector shaft was very badly worn.
