My mk3 8v or my sisters freelander
« on: 13 August 2005, 15:31 »
Hi all i have given myself a dilemma. Me and the wife and 3 other passengers are off too st tropez, south of france on thursday 18th. 5 days to go. I have been preparing my golf for about 4 weeks now and is totaly reliable & i am pretty much 100% certain it will do this 2000mile trip with no problems whatso ever. The problem i have got is my sister as now said i can take her 1.8 freelander 1999 model @72000miles and is well maintained. As far as space goes and comfort goes the freelander wins hands down. However the k series rover engine in the landers are very prone too overheating & blowing the head gasket. "dont get this with my ultra reliable golf." Also i think my golf will be better on fuel. The wife wants me too take the lander purely because of the room and comfort im a bit undecided as i think freelanders are unrelaible. any advive appreciated thanks in advance!! :undecided: :undecided: :undecided: :undecided:

tough one, golf will get you there but a bit cramped, freelander might get you there with a bit of space.

Actually 5 up in a freelander won't be much better I'd have thought?

Hmm Freelander for me .

You dont want to be travelling 2 miles never mind 2000 miles with a wife thats in a mood about lack of space etc.

vey good point "lol" wife with space problem. i have decided against the freelander. the k series 1.8 rover engine fitted too freelanders as got a serious design fault and far too many new freelander's have had head gasket problems. i did a google search for freelanders and most pages were about head gasket problems. basically they are rubish vehicles and they really are off road vehicles in every sense of the word. i even asked for advice from the local independent land rover service centre and was advised by there head mechanic too go in my golf which is @142.000 miles as apoosed to a freelander @72.000 miles he quoted that the freelander will blow the head gasket for sure very soon! "so glad i own a vw golf" thanks for your reply's.

Off Road as in - shouldn't be anywhere near a road or a field for that matter!!

Glad you're going with the Golf mate; you'll have more fun getting there at least!!!
