R32 v GTI Performance
« on: 09 July 2013, 21:47 »
Harking back to past VW Golf classics got me thinking.

Wouldn't it be cool to compare a run out R32 vs GTI Performance. I'd love to see how they compare dynamically, cornering, 0-60, straight line speed and flat out.

They're closer than you think:

R32 manual v GTI PP manual
246bhp v 226bhp
236lb-ft v 258lb-ft
6.3 sec v 6.4 sec
155 mph v 155 mph
4x4 v 2 wheel drive
V6 v 4 cylinder

Love to see a YouTube clip of a head-to-head (its the big kid in me).

Past: MK7 GTI / DSG / WHITE / 5 DR

Would like to see a 4 th gear rolling start at 30mph

I'm certain the torque of the new gti would get it to 100 first..

1510kg unladen weight v 1382kg Unladen weight

Bejesus that's 128kg weight advantage to the GTI

Love it, if only we were all wealthy enough to keep all our cars ever owned or buy the ones we always craved at different times in our years to compare and cherish whenever we wanted

Umm very close call on this one HFO

Must admit, if I had the money, I would love to have a late model, standard and unmolested MK5 R32 in blue (5 door), in the garage alongside the GTD for weekend blasts.

Sorry for so many posts, but I'm on holiday at the moment, sat by the pool, just browsing the forums on the ipad, with nothing better to do

As you can see from my footer I went from a 230bhp Edition 30 GTi to a Golf R32 in 2008 so a little similar

I reckon with straight-line performance there is probably little difference, the R32 would initially be a bit faster but run out of "puff" at the top of the rev range.  Whereas once the turbo kicks in on the GTi from around 3000rpm (lower on the Mk 7 ?) that would have the edge up to the redline.

What I can say is that they would be completely different cars to drive, and they would feel like it too.

The GTi is much lighter, more nimble, chuckable and probably more suited to roads with slow tight bends.

The R32 would feel heavier and with a much more planted feel, and very rarely is traction a problem ... it will just catapult out of bends, even with steering lock on.

The R32 had a lot of character with the glorious soundtrack of its V6, but at the end of the day it was a big heavy lump of an engine, difficult to tune, and costing over £400 in tax alone every year

Gone but not forgotten

Hey Jonny that's a belter that is. Best colour too. Thanks for posting up

Love the description of the four wheel drive traction and handling. As you say a big old lump up front but what a sound it made. This is why I think VW should be making the R brand cars a bit more special.

I'd love to have owned an R32 but it was out of my league financially and the running costs too
