clutch pedal problem
« on: 08 July 2013, 18:31 »
most of you will probably already know what im going too say

4 words... white clip (and) black clip

the rod within the, what i can only explain as inside the cylindrical thing, isnt going in when pressing the clutch pedal, causing the black clip to pop off and the white clip to pop out of the metal 'jacket' that is attached to the cylindrical thingy

so currently my car is stuck at work with no clutch pedal, how can i fix this? the black clip isnt broke but it wont stay on, not even with cable ties (they snap)

any ideas greatly appreciated

cheers ta, thanks very moochos!

you dead sure its not snapped?

mine snapped a while ago, and it snapping is a common problem with the clutch, but never heard of it just slipping out.

could be snapped just you cant see it or find the part thas snaped off.

or it could have a crack in it that's causing it to bend when you press pedal and come out with out you being able to see (unless your some kind of gymnast and can press the pedal with foot while having head under the dash looking at it :D )

As above it's more than likely that the small square on the pedal has snapped. It's only tacked together so it breaks in a crash but with the stresses and strains of the last 10-15 years they weaken and fail. It's a relatively easy fix but can be a bit of a pig.

If you pedal has snapped there are two options weld yours back together (the option I took as it won't break again and is the cheapest) or get a new pedal.

im able to press the pedal with my hand (and head under the dash) to see the pedal depress, but the rod that is held on with the white clip stays where it is

the black clip broke on me first time so ive changed it, it just doesnt stay on, i cant possibly see where it could be broke, but maybe there is a fracture that maybe i need to look for tomorrow

cheers

This happened to my mates car a few weeks ago. He paid a mobile mechanic, cost £90 with parts and labour to fit a replacement pedal. Personally I'd find someone that can weld. I wouldn't fancy doing it, I'd advise removing drivers seat for a more comfortable work space!

When I had to do mine we did it ourselves so I think it cost about 3 quid in the end for the plastic parts. The worst part is getting the spring relocated, it helps if you've got a helper with small hands otherwise its a right pita.

OP I would suggest taking the pedal out to look for damage to the metal box on the back of the pedal chances are that square is broken. It's hard to see when it's still attached to the car.

i have now found the problem, a small metal retaining piece to hold the white clip in has broke, i think i have this piece at home, so it may be able to be welded (a mate is a good welder) alternatively, i may have to take the clutch pedal from my mates car (same mate, his golf will never be on the road lol)

That's the piece. It's not so much a retaining clip so much as one of the sides of a small box section. I'd get your mate to weld it up for you, that way it won't happen again! There are a lot of good guides for switching the pedal out.

Word of advice get some small but strong cable ties to compress the spring and someone with small hands to get it into place. Oh and watch your eyes!

ye thats the piece, how annoying, its such a clean break that even myself and 3 mates didnt see it first time round

my mate (who is a member on here) isnt able to repair it tomorrow as id like so iit seems ill have to seek a mobile mechanic who can weld within the bham area who can come to my work and fix it there

thanks for the advice guys
