Tips on improving mpg?!
« on: 06 July 2013, 17:10 »

Hiya all,

I've always had rubbish mpg from the gti

(hoping the latest full service plus engine flush will help.  I guess i Will only know once the gas treatment stuff is all used up in current half tank load, and I fill up with just normal petrol.)

Are there any tips for improving mpg, beside more careful driving?!

K&n air filter etc?!

Hope you can advise

Cheers
Martin

Ps:  my mpg figures
27mpg if I go at pace along the m4 for 100miles etc
32 if I go at 70 mph.... Go figure!

Its a distict art driving economical. Its not about being careful or going slow but rather uber smooth. Reading the road ahead, keeping momentum. Minimal braking. Small considerate smooth throttle inputs. I can get near 38mpg out my vr6 over 50 miles driving it a certain way but it averages 30 most of the time. I once averaged 48mpg in my mk3 8v over 100 miles.

I have a k&n Induction kit, 4-2-1 manifold system on my ABF 16 v, On the run to my girlfriends I do each week (167 miles) I average 42 MPG doing 70 Mph, If anyone can figure out if thats right i use just under half a tanks worth from full.

I change my oil every 3 - 5 K using fuchs titan fully synthetic and use only shell v power. I think this has alot to do with it :)

Don't carry around things you don't need. My golf clubs and trolley live in my boot almost permanantley, but I have a diesel so who cares  But on long journeys I remove them.

As said previous, it is about keeping momentum, if you see red traffic lights, stop accelerating. Simple things I guess...

Planning ahead; brake as little as possible etc

F*ck off it does.

Regular oil changes on the right grade oil - yes that'll help things along.

Using super-unleaded *might* make a tiny difference on an ABF as it'll advance the ignition more, but I think your economy figures have far more to do with having an engine with reasonable management on it in a relatively light car, running on relatively open miles.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Maybe someone should do an average run test on both fuels? See if it makes it worth the difference, I always run my car on higher octane fuels, the ABF is meant to be run on 97 or higher anyways.

Read an article in autocar they used two astra vxr's and the one on Tesco's 99 octane gave better MPG than the one run on stamdard Tesco fuel :)

If you look up high octance fuel economy on google seems to be a lot of evidence it helps might not make 20mpg lol, but it helps and its better for your engine, win win if you ask me :)

if your driveing in economy mode fuel octane  95 or 97 dosent make any differance.

manifol pressures are low when driveing gently so the engine isn't likely to run into spark knock so no ignition timeing will be pulled.

driveing a bit harder you'll notice mpg differance.

driveing hard theres no mpg differance you just go faster

all the VW's have gone bar 1.

it may gain you a few mpg but you pay more for it so its not even worth thinking about. just drive downhill everywhere lol
