if you have the later spec airbox as found on big bumper 16v's & G60's then just pull the resonator tube out of the base of the box for the same effect

on the offside side of the box drill 4 - 6   1/2" holes

remove the panel on the inner wing

do them on the BOTTOM HALF of the airbox - not what a plum I knew did and drilled the top of the box (rookie mistake)

I drilled mine out almost the same as that (the bottom not the top :) ) and then screened the holes with some window screen epoxyed over the holes. don't know if it really does anything but it may keep small critters and leaves and such from getting in the airbox.

I've always found a 16mm spade bit works a treat and you end up with something that looks like connect 4.

same here 16mm spade bit all over the bottom half, well apart from engine pulley side, have got a k+n panel in my 8v gti and it sucks like maddona! feels alot quicker lower down in the rev range, butnot so sure it holds on as long up top, saying that you dont need to rev the nuts off the 8v cause its all about low down torque,

id say do it, it did mine the world of good, sounds raw when ya boot it but take it steady and youd never know it was done!, not had any increase in fuel consumption etc, although if youve got k-jet fuel system youll have to adjust as shell run a bit leaner!

After I drilled out my airbox on my old valve (and fitted the ubiquitous K&n) - I had a session on the rolling road at GrantMotorSport in Bristol and he was able to squeeze an extra 12bhp by merely by increasing the mixture (and running on 98 octane fuel). ;D

He also seemed to be impressed by the induction roar which could set off car alarms at 10 paces - my exhaust  has a std back box btw, I've never been impressed by exit pipes wider than an inch and a quarter! ;)

When I added the 4-1 and the flowed head and cams - well, let's just say I was suitably impressed with the 165+ bhp he managed to wrench from my (190k miles)  KR engine!!!. :o :o :o

spot on results there!, must admit mines only got standard exhaust system which is a bit throaty but not overly load, the induction roar sound over the exhaust!(when ya floor it) cant describe what it sounds like as ive done this to gtes and sris in the past but the noise for the old 8v is awesome! would love to get both of mine on a rollin road! will have to find out where the nearest 1 is!
