It should be less, the mk7 is about 5 groups lower.
You may find as I have because its a new car worth according to insurance companys anyway twice what my old one is worth its higher.
I have found in my case that in the past 20 years that an insurance group rating is meeningless and is no way to judge the cost for me. Its why I went off and tried a few of the comparison sites to get an idea of the cost. I didnt select the launch model.
Anyway it wasnt much different, and didnt bother me.

Fathoming the finer details of insurance risk is almost as fruitless as fathoming VWs system of allocating build dates and subsequent build delays. Insurance group is a factor, but as experience and years NCD go up it is less of an issue. Some would argue that someone driving a new car is less of a risk because they'll be looking to take more care of it, and that extra care taken negates the extra repair costs should the worst happen.

The latest quotes i've had for the GTD are half of what I was paying for my Scirocco in Nov 2011, with no significant milestones in age or NCD (i've been 10+ years NCD for a few years now). Oddly, the GTD will cost me about 7% more to insure than a GTI.

Exactly what I was trying to say. There is no logic in insurance premium costs and very little relationship to the group rating imo people have to go and compare for themselfs.
I have bought cars in the past because they are less popular  have cost hundreds less than the popular models but been load of groups higher.
Maybe the scirrocco for example in this case is a higher cost premium rated by insurance companys than the GTI who knows. Thats why its all different.
Heres an even more barmy example. I have a SEAT leon TDI130 I run over the winter months, shopping, trips to tip etc.I was going to replace it with a brand new hyundai i10 1.2 style earlier this year. I ran some quotes. The Hyundai was more expensive to insure than the Leon. It was actually far closer to the GTI in premium costs than closer to the leon!

When I ran the numbers before ordering it came out at £300, just tried comparing meerkats and its now £400, which is a bit annoying.  Not sure why now.  Could be because this time I selected performance version, could be last time I was actually running it for the mk6...

I added my wife and it got more expensive despite all advice suggesting an additional driver should bring it down.  I also found that the more voluntary excess I applied the more expensive it got.  When I changed £200 to £500 the cheapest quote went UP by £50 per year!?!

The only difference between an insurance premium and a mugging that I can tell is one of them you can report to the police.

I have just renewed my Scirocco insurance today for £259 and the GTI would cost me £268 if I had the car today. So according to the lady on the phone I should be able to swap to the GTI in a few weeks for the admin fee of £15.

go on more than meerkats as different insurers use different risk evaluations. some will give you a cheaper price for more than 1 driver but you need to look for them.

Good point.  Usually I use moneysupermarket which is what I did last time.  I also plan on giving Adrian Flux a call, but apparently they can see exactly what quotes you've been given from other companies so you need to legitimately get something low in order to ask them to beat it.

I use all the major comparison sites as well as Aviva and Direct Line. I find brokers are cheapest for modders, those in their teens and early twenties and those without full no claims - they will usually match or beat a quote you bring to them by a fiver or so. You sometimes see some big differences between the comparison sites, not in price, but the level of excess needed.

insurance really is horses for courses. more than are by far the cheapest for me but people in other parts of the country aren't. insurers go for particular car brands for particular people in particular areas.

Not all insurance companies offer new car replacement cover.

For instance Admiral don't, Direct Line do.

Direct Line promise a new car replacement if it is written off/stolen in the first 12 months if you are the first owner.

Admiral will give you 'market value'.
