mk3 gti 8v fuel problem
« on: 04 July 2013, 19:58 »
alright! just got a mk3 4 days ago and its been sweet as a nut, put 20 quid in it and it went lovely and as you would expect about 24mph urban, then earlier today i stuck 15 quid in and the needle went from about quarter tank, to just under half a tank, now I wasnt watching the needle whilst driving, but when I got to my next destination (about 8 miles away) it was back down under quarter tank?! how has it used 15 quids worth of fuel in less than ten miles?!

The only thing I can think to mention is that i have a whole in the mid section of the exhaust, which when in fifth on motorway makes a bit of noise, but otherwise its only just noticeable... im stumped...

Might not be using that much fuel. Faulty sensor in tank or youve parked on a hill.

That's happend to me before, where it's showing 3 quarters of a tank, 5 mins later it's down to first quarter.

Don't take notice of it lol.

Thanks for your replies, ive driven it twice since and now its going down gradually from a quarter tank? So could it be  a whole in the tank? Surely i wouldve noticed it pissing out on the floor?

You would definatley smell and see such a loss, the senders on the mark three are notoiusly inaccurate ,so I wouldn't worry to much.

Yeah, the mk3 doesnt always tell you the correct fuel level in my view. Due to speed, gradients, etc. I am also sure the design of the tank is a bit weird which doesn't help.

Longer you drive, you will get a better understanding of your fuel levels and consumption. Give it a good service though and change the fuel filter too.

it's under the car, near driver side rear wheel.
