I've seen this type of thread on other forums where people post up cool features they've discovered in the MK7 that wouldn't be obvious at first glance or in the manual (if you read it?!)...

1. I was driving into work this morning and I noticed the Climate Control has a "Setup" button. When I pressed it, the Climate settings appeared on the radio screen, showing an interior image of the car! There were various climate settings I could then fiddle with via the media screen. Very cool.

2. You never need to touch the electronic handbrake. Just forget it. Leave the HOLD button on permanently and the handbrake engages and disengages itself whenever appropriate. I thought I'd hate this but it's genius.

3. Rear cup holders no longer in the centre console front armrest. There's a cupholder either side of the rear bench (3 door).

4. The bluetooth connectivity is far better than the MK6. BT audio streaming works a lot better - track names/artists and it will play where you left off rather than  having to pull out the phone and manually "play" again via the phone.

5. Several people have asked me why the car doesn't have front fogs. You can barely see them. Very clever design.. once lit, they are obvious!

6. Static cornering lights - these are really impressive! The corners of the car light up brilliantly when you are turning left/right. The light is built into the main light housing. I had mistakenly thought it was the fogs.

7. Another feature I thought I'd hate - Stop/Start. It works very well. Car starts instantly when required, no delay. The car is so quiet and smooth on tickover anyway that I barely even notice that the engine has stopped.

8. The MFD has a lap timer!!! I haven't played with it yet.

9. A lot of settings that you'd have had a button on the dash for in MK5/6, are now controlled via the media screen, such as the tyre pressure monitor, the brightness of the dash / ambient lights, etc. The media screen is like a lite version of BMW iDrive!

10. Mirrors fold on locking and unfold when you start ignition. I love this. It can be disabled too though.

11. Keyless entry, for those that have it, is a great feature. I'm still getting used to not having to fumble around for the key or look for the ignition slot.

12. I was a bit worried that the standard radio/Nav screen is a bit smaller than the RNS 510 I had in the MK6. And yes, it is noticeably a bit smaller, but the functionality, ease of use, Maps resolution / detail more than make up for it. The maps look really detailed and dynamic (if that makes sense) compared to the very flat looking maps in the RNS. Also when you are in radio / media mode, the current location / street you are on appears across the top of the media screen, along with phone signal / phone battery info... very nice.

13. The interior ambient lighting - how can I put this - it is just the god damn nuts!! I've gone out every night so far just to sit into the car in the dark and admire it. My GF thinks I'm completely nuts, god knows what the neighbours think

I'm sure I'll think of more later...

Thanks Joe. It sounds like they've really thought about the little details that go to make a great car. Can't wait to get mine now. Been in transit for over a week, so not long hopefully.

Everytime I see something about keyless entry I kick myself for not having specced it

Joe,

Quick question. I've also ordered a three door. What's the space like in the back, and how easy is it to get in and out of?

Thanks

Terrible post Joe, can we get this guy banned till I've got my car?

Just kidding mate, love hearing ipabout it. Just a quick question though; how easy is it to update the POIs to get speed cameras onto the nav?

I tried to take a few and my photography skills do not do it justice at all! But here's my attempt at the rear end anyway:

Believe it or not... I actually think the rear space looks smaller than it did in the MK5/6. I haven't sat into it but it does seem a bit more snug, strangely enough. I know when you stand at the rear of the car that the roof is definitely a bit lower at the rear end of the car than it was in the MK6.

Getting in and out... well, it's the same pain in the ass that it is in every 3 door car to be honest. Anytime I've carried passengers in the past they can never work out how to fold the seat back either. The folding lever is different in the MK7 though, perhaps a bit more intuitive.

Joe, wondering if you can check something?

If you have the engine running and the sat nav turned on what happens if you open the drivers door?  I can't get the manuals in pdf but I got a Skoda one for what appears to be basically the same system and it states that if you have keyless entry the nav unit will turn off when you open the drivers door.

The sequence is:
Engine on
Turn on Nav
Open door
Nav goes off

Result might be different if you turn on the nav after the engine has been turned off... not sure.
