Took my camshaft off yesterday in preparation for renewing the valve stem seals and also noticed lack of clamp at position 4. According to the Bentley manual, petrol engines (at least American spec gasoline ones) didn't come with one. There are not any holes to screw studs into on my head and it looks like there is an oil jet fitted in place of the feed for the journal bearing which probably sprays oil all over the place. May be blocking the jet off would stop my engine smoking, probably easier than changing seals

So is there anyone out there who actually knows whether this should be there, or not?

I've been working on VWs since 84 and I can assure you have nothing to worry about ( IT'S A FEATURE OF THE MODEL SIR"  )  , Oh and by the way the answers ' NOT'

Well I'll throw a spanner in the works then.......

I, like someone else on here bought another head, through my experience with engines have never come across a car with one missing and couldn't understand why the need to remove it so thought maybe broken off at sometime and removed.

The replacement head HAS got the 4th bracket on which I am happier to fit than one without.

Something I did notice was the head with the 4th clamp had germany stamped on the front which I understand is the better quality head than the Brazilian made one (only what I am hearing), I wonder if it's the German made ones that have the 4th bracket.

Some of you are saying it's ment NOT to be there so how have I got one with it then?

Sorry but one thing that may make a difference is wether it is a ' hydraulic ' or ' shim ' tappet head as from what I recall ( a lot if not all ) hydraulic heads did have the 4th cap missing .Never knew the reason but also never had any problems with any of the VWs or AUDIs that had this " PHENOMENON ".
