Mk2 8V cylinder head question
« on: 12 August 2005, 13:50 »
Hi

Can some once and for all clear up a query I have had for a while please.

When I took the rocker cover of my engine the second clamp in from the right holding the camshaft down is missing, I went on ebay and there were heads for sale which had the same clamp missing so I thought this was standard but couldn't work out why it wouldn't be on there. I bought a haynes manual and that showed the clamp on there so I rang VW and someone from the service department said it should be on there and mine snapped of at some time in it's life. I managed to find a head on ebay that has got the clamp on so I bought it. I just been to a scrappy and looked at 3 golfs and they have all got the same clamp missing like mine, second in from the right (flywheel end).

I'm confused, Is it suppose to be there or not?

Regards

Was missing on my 1.6 Driver and pretty much every 8v engine I've seen has it missing.  My Driver didn't blow up so it don't worry about it :)

VW are the last people you ask for advice, most of em are complete muppets

But is it suppose to be there, was it there when new?

If they are suppose to be there, where have they all gone? has every golf had it's rocker cover taken off and then bit removed from rattling around in the head.

No idea why it's missing but I seriously doubt so many cars would be without one if it was fitted from the factory!  One of the great VW mysteries

The replacement one I have coming has it on and the haynes manual shows one and I can't really see why VW would perposly miss it out. There doesn't seem to be any obvious reason for leaving it off.

Mines not there either.  The theory me and my mechanic friends came up with is they designed the casting to have one there if required. but in the final design, never used it. Who knows? find a VW engine design engineer and ask him!

So is there anyone out there who actually knows whether this should be there, or not?

It shouldn't be there.  We don't know why, but it really isn't a problem.  Look at all the replies, and not one person has had their engine blow up, and neither has yours :)
