not off to a great start - more pics!!!!
« on: 02 July 2013, 12:09 »
hey guys,
I collected my GTI yesterday evening and it's back into the workshop already! Not such a good start, eh?!

I mentioned it in another thread, but my rear LED lights are not working as they should. The indicators aren't flashing across the width of the cluster like they should do, only on the outer clusters. And some of the red LED's aren't functioning on one side either. I thought it would a simple tweak and I'd be back on the road, but several hours later they are still looking at it and still scratching their heads! It's not helped of course by this being one of the first GTI's in the country so they've not seen it before, the rear LED clusters are new to them, not on the lesser Golfs.

I even showed the tech a youtube video to convince him that the indicators should flash the entire width! Unreal.

Also, its lashing rain this morning and I wasn't too impressed with the wipers. The drivers side wiper judders and squeeks a lot on the downward sweep and I think it smacked the A-pillar on the way up... not impressive at all I'm afraid.

How do the cars get out of the factory, never mind through a PDI with issues like this. Grrrrrrrrr.

Aside from all that, the car really is very nice. The interior is absolutely fabulous at night with all the ambient lighting, particularly the doors with the red strip running the length of them. I thought the footwell lights would be red, but they're actually white. The Discover media / standard Nav is very impressive, the NAV seems to have much more map detail and looks much more dynamic than the RNS 510. Anyone who's stuck with the standard screen won't be disappointed.

I really love the keyless entry and start. A real classy touch and the new key design with the GTI emblem is great.

Anyway, hopefully this lights issue is sorted out ASAP!

Here's a few pics I took lastnight...

Looks super mate!

The side views with the 3 door make it look long, low and sleek.  I'm impressed!  Hope they fix your lights soon then.  Sounds like a loose connection, but you'd have thought they'd find that fast, not be scratching their heads over it.  Tell them to get a multimeter on it!

Hopefully it is just a small thing but given ££ spent and prestige of vehicle it is always frustrating to have any issues at all.

Someone stated to use Rain X on screen and this stops the drag? My A3 when not used for a while always has wipers stick/catch and always makes me jump without fail! - hopefully again an adjustment and some Rain X will resolve?

I have the standard Sat Nav ordered and good to read your views as though was not worried still nice to have some confirmation anyway :)

Hope back on road soon and simply just enjoying the experience :)

Outside of the niggles she looks sooo sweet in white and more I see, and see many now, the more I like the MK7 GTI/GTD

Sh!tty wipers (poor downstroke on drivers side - eventually leaving a smear under the knuckle of the wiper) are a known problem on the MK7 Golf. Sh!tty Valeo wipers. Same thing happened with my first Scirocco and they tried all sorts - special windscreen preps/rubbing pastes (blaming wax/shampoo cleaning), new windscreen, 3 new sets of wipers. The cure? Bosch Aerotwin wipers but apparently they don't have a direct fit for the MK7 yet. Don't get the Goodyear wipers from Costco to swap over - they are sh!te!

The wipers on Golfs are always sh!te - not only do they wear out really quickly, they also are totally random when on auto (or at least the mk 5 and 6 ones were).  I was hoping they'd fixed that, but clearly not!

Hope you get the lights fixed soon - on the plus side it looks the nuts!!

I got a new set of wipers for my Mark 6 from a VW dealer and they squeaked for a while as well.  Try cleaning them with some bicarbonate of soda and a clean rag to wipe off any gunk that's on them.

Various sites suggest using a mixture of bicarbonate of soda, water and dishwashing liquid:

Thanks guys.
Any questions ye have on features / functionality of the car, feel free to ask, I'll be happy to help or investigate, assuming I get my car back!

I drove it around my estate last night which has a few big bends in it and I could see the cornering lights very obviously as I turned left/right. I thought it might be the fog lights coming on/off but Jimble reckons its the static cornering light in the main light unit itself. The driver's side "corner" of the car lit up very noticeably as I turned right for example.

I don't know whether it was the fog lamp or the static light, as I couldn't see the front of the car from my seat

Since we're talking about wipers I have a question.  How much control do you have over the interval?

I like the way my Ford works.  It has 'Fast', 'Very Fast', and 'Intermittent'.  When it is in the intermittent mode you can use a scroll wheel to increase or decrease the time delay between each wipe.  Thats surprisingly useful!  Does the GTI have anything like this?
