re-upholstering door cards
« on: 01 July 2013, 23:01 »
I'm thinking of possibly recovering the black material that's on the door cards, the material behind the door handle area.
I found somewhere on the internet a long time ago showing how to do it but that was by mistake and now I'm looking for it I can't find it anywhere.

Has anybody done this before?

If you have then please could you provide me with some information like the do's and don'ts and what kind of flue and fabric should be used.

All help appreciated

You have to take everything off then decide if you leave the existing material on or take that off as well.

Source some new material, vinyl or leather or whatever and use some upolstry spray glue

What car is it on?
I did some mk4 door cards ages ago but you could split the fabric panels from the door cards which made life easy, I want to do my mk3 door cards but they look to be 1 piece so not sure how to go about it.

It's on a mk4 mate, I'm only looking to reupholster the actual fabric part, for a red suede effect. But I'm not sure how you go about removing the staple things holding it on

From what a reputable trimmer told me, it's as simple as heating up the 'globs' of plastic that hold the trim piece in place hot enough to melt them off.  Use a soldering iron to do it, and then replacing the panel is just a case of melting the previously melted plastic over the holes to hold it in place.

Cable or zip ties are a great filler when plastic welding too.
