crank sensor? 1.8t agu

Hi guys got a problem with my golf, last night me and a few friends decided to go on a long drive from milton keynes, we headed down the m1 and ended up in hemel in which my golf was running perfect wasnt missing a beat, we stayed there for a few hours then decided to go to london, as i arrived into london my car started jerking and the rev counter was dropping and bouncing about at the wrong speed it then come to a stop (stalled) and wouldnt start again, i checked for the fuel pump priming in which it was ( new pump) so then whipped out a coilpack and checked for a spark amd there wasnt one across all four cylinders( also had 4 new coilpacks and ignition module) so we left it 20 mins and tried restarting it and it
 started!! So we decided to carry om and then another 2 odd miles.down the road the same symptoms started happening and cut out again... any ideas as to what this can be? Pulling the rest of my hair out of my receding head! Lol

Definately sounds like the crank sensor mate, the fact that the rev counter is going crazy too!

without sounding silly, that's where the rev counter gets it signal from for the engine speed right? Just thinking if the crank sensor was duff would it cause it to not start t all or is is basically just a sign of the sensor starting to break down? Are they common to go on these? I've only had the car a month and spent over £400 on it already lol. I bought it with a stutter/misfire so replaced all the common things to go with oe quality (fuel pump,ignition module,4 coil packs,maf sensor) so it definitely can't be any of them...

Yes mate, crank position sensor tells ecu where number one piston is to tdc, the ecu can then calculate when to fire the coils and injectors. The ecu sends a signal then to the clusters. Without this information from the crank your engine is just a block of iron. It might be able to use information from the cam sensor to limp mode, but I doubt it does!

so best bet is to change the crank sensor then I guess..
