back to getting my hands dirty
« on: 30 June 2013, 05:21 »
Have owned my mk2 for some years now but have just bought myself a mk2 3dr L52M Schwartz blue one. Not seen this colour before but looks great. Got a long list of jobs to do including a new headlining, gear linkages, coolant flush, speedo not working (urg!! cog fell out into gearbox last night)  removal of oil catch tank, handbrake won't stay on, re fit original backbox. Only problem is I've had kids since!!! Finding the time could be an issue. I'll try and get some pics up

When I examined my handbrake level after removing, half the tooth had come off meaning if you nudged it sideways it would come off. Not great living on a hill. MK3 handbrake will fit right in, just take the plug and wire to splice in the hang bake light.

All easy jobs. Apart from dodging the kids and frustrated wife!

The only pain in the arse is going to be the headlining, as they are extremely brittle and a fart will snap it in half!

Yea not looking forward to that!! I have just ordered the stuff as per the guide on the maintenance section. Any suggestions what to do about the speedo cog in the gearbox can I let it get chewed up and then change the gearbox oil?.

hi can you take handbrake lever of and file the tooth clean? as for the gearbox I wouldn't leave the speedo head in it. it might be fine but its not a chance I would take.

The headlining isn't that bad, I dome it by myself in only a few hours. Get it loose and slide it out the boot

I've taken one out before only difference this time is only the cardboard backing is on. Could be a bit flimsy!!

I took all the fabric off mine still in the car when it had some support. Can just imagine the whole thing turning to confetti if you tried to pull the fabric off with it out the car.

It's plastic and designed to be obliterated in the gearbox, should it fall in.

Unless you can see it, looking down in the gearbox and you have something that can grab it, you're going to have to let it get smashed up and dump the oil out in due course.

Handbrake - get a replacement mechanism?  See how much they are from VW, if you can get hold of them - it's a simple part.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.
