All I can say is, how can having something that shows you a complete view of the entire area behind your car be a bad thing?!  It's not about parking skill (or lack thereof) it's just a safety and convenience thing.  I've been driving for 22 years now, and never hit a bollard or car behind me yet.  I still see the value in it, but £160 is £160, and for some will be better spent elsewhere, or not at all ;)

I thought that the field of view would be quite narrow as you approach a solid obstacle like a car or wall behind you - is that not the case?
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

It's a fairly wide viewing angle actually, pretty neat. And it looks very clear and sharp, even on the standard Discover media. I'll take a couple of pics of the screen on mine tonight.

It's pretty wide actually, wide enough to see far more than you can just by looking over your shoulder.  Like most things, it's not the panacea, but for me, better than not having it at all.

Not a great pick but this is what you see on the RCD screen in my mk6, it looks a bit blurry but i think thats just cos the camera was so close.

in theory using park assist and the camera you should never hit, nudge, scrape  or bump into anything.

Yup, and there are plenty of videos on YouTube showing the view you get and how the guide lines show where your car will end up based on your current steering angle.

From my own point of view its not going to be of any benefit to me so it's £160 saved

Technically is £160 not spent!

Would have been good if it was recording to the SSD on a rolling file that saves if you get bumped.  They could have then done the same thing with the front cam used for lane assist.  Front and rear vids is something I'd like.  Got a dual camera setup from ebay for about £40 but its not great so not sure I'll transfer it to the GTI or not.

Without taking this topic completely off of the original topic on Rear View Cameras, I will fill  in you guy's in on how I get around the issue of storing my Key Fob when participating in Surfing ( I didn't write 'Water Sports' as some may see inuendo).  Presently with my Honda I have 3 key Fobs.  One is the original everyday key on my keyring which I use to drive.  The other two are spares.  One is a fully functional Spare and the other is a Blank Key Blade without the Fob remote being paired or activated.  When I go Surfing I will leave the original Key in the Car and lock the door with the Non-Activiated Spare Key.  I will then place this key in a 100% waterproof diving bag and key this tethered in the Key Pocket of my Wetsuit. To ensure the Key is completely protected in the Diving Bag I put the Key inside a Balloon, this protects the key should the Diving Bag ever leak, this part is just satisfy my paranoia.

Once I have finished Surfing I will get the Spare key out of the Diving Bag and unlock the Door with the Blade.  With my current car this will then almost definitely set off the alarm, which I then have to deactivate with my Original Key stored in the car.

My dilemma with the GTI is I could continue to unlock the car the same way, but the Key hole is covered with a cap which will eventually result the paint work being damaged at some point.

I am planning on having a third key produced for my GTI which will a fully operational Remote Locking Fob.  I have tested placing the Remote Locking key Fob for my Honda in the Diving Bag and submerging it in cold water for a long period of time.  It does still work after and remains bone dry.  I plan on leaving the original key on my keyring which I use for driving as usual in the car and taking the spare in the water (within the Diving Bag).  Should anything happen to the Key I will have another spare at home which can be obtained to access the car, rather than breaking in and damaging it.

I can guarantee Diving Bags work, I have used it for years and I even know surfers who take their MP3 Players and iPhones in with them.  Sounds ridiculous but true

Anyway back on to topic now.  I am happy to have configured my Car with the Rear View Camera.  It may be viewed as a bit of a gimmick by some, but why not make the most of your car if you can afford it.

I bet the rear view camera is just a gimmick to the the folk that never specced it.
Best extra £ for £

I don't need a camera to help me reverse park. Not had one before, don't need one now

Yeah your right but its called evolving. When I started driving in the 80's I never thought I'd need an automatic choke. Nothing wrong with pulling the choke out for a few miles
Or fancy electric windows. They were just for posers.
Power steering!?!? That's how you worked your biceps!!!
Climate control?? Just open and shut the window every few miles.
A 6 player CD system. Wow nobody would ever need that amount of music, ever. Total over kill.
Quadrophonic sound system. Your just showing off.
Cruise control. Only in your dreams.

The list is endless.
I could say the Sat Nav is a waste of time as I have only ever got lost once in my life and only ever use it properly every couple of weeks for going to football matches but it didn't stop me shelling out £1680.
Yet when I had the camera in my Golf I would use it every journey. Every single person new into the car would comment on it.
£165 was a steal.

But each to their own
