This thread has taken a bizarre twist

If only the Golf could turn into a submarine like the Lotus in James Bond - problem solved!

A normal key has electronics which interact with the immobiliser when you put the key in the ignition (presumably the main reason they cost £80 a pop when you lose them) - I wouldn't want to get a normal key wet either.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

In that case Brenbo's backup key isn't going to work either!

I don't need a camera to help me reverse park. Not had one before, don't need one now

You used to be able to get a physical key that was just a key to unlock the doors (you would now have to pop the cover off the handle) and then use the proper key once you were in to disable the alarm and drive it (so you could lock a proper key in the glovebox).

I don't need one either, in the same way I don't need parking sensors, or a heated front screen to help clear windows, or built-in sat nav to help get me where I'm going...  As already said, for the small amount of money it costs in relative terms, one of the best options.

It's all a matter of opinion at the end of the day  For those who suffer with back problems I can see its benefits and your right, it's not an expensive option. From my own point of view its not going to be of any benefit to me so it's £160 saved

I do wonder whether the camera makes you focus purely on the car behind you more than the overall position of your car in a space e.g the car is 12mm off the car behind it, but is in it's space at a 15 degree angle.

Never been let down by the rear sensors on my Scirocco yet - they pick-up bollards etc with ease. I'd consider the camera and park assist (and any other driver aid) as gimmicks if they don't make the task they're assigned considerably easier, and parking a Golf is already a piece of cake with it's great rear visibility (much better than my Scirocco) and parking sensors all around. If you think you might want or need them, they're 2 of the cheapest options you can get, so relatively speaking it's not much to shell oout for. I'd be far more tempted for the camera if it activated for 5 mins recorded time when the car was nudged (to capture hit and run drivers in the car parks).

I find the Golf hard enough to judge when reversing, or maybe I'm crap at parking  I would often get out of the car thinking I'm very close to the car / obstacle behind me, but in reality, I'd have acres of room to spare. So I think the camera will definitely help in those situations.
It'll also be useful for avoiding things out of line of sight (bollards - or worse, small children running around behind you).
