Anything with a bit of engineering skill and a deep and forgiving pocket.

There is a twin engined mk1 with 2 audi engines in it. Basically put two engines in a mk2 car and you are on your way to fame and reputation in the dub scene

Most powerful i have seen is a 1.8T, they get tuned to silly levels but then they are very liable to be blown up. Pretty cheap way for big power gains, also a VR6 conversion is a popular one. supercharged, turbo'd or both.

Really it is entirely up to you how individual you wish to be as anything is possible with the right application of mechanics and engineering ability.

Ive even seen a mk2 with a cosworth engine in. All depends on how crazy or rich you are i suppose. I live my life by the phrase "Nothing is impossible"

Yeah, at the RS Owners day at Silverstone the other weekend (my mates are Cossie owners so i got dragged along) i saw a Mk1 Cabrio with a 300+ bhp Cosworth engine powering all 4 wheels! Used the Sierra tunnel. Did look very professional job but still cant understand why someone would mix a Ford lump with a VW! What an insult!!!!

pick an engine and get it in there!! anything is possible. i'd like to see more people trying to use the vauxhall xe or the citroen mi16 as these engines have far more tuning potential than the 8v or 16v motors. with 160 bhp as standard both the xe and the mi16 are capable of a reliable 250 bhp in fairly affordable states of tune. of course, as previously mentioned, not sticking within the VAG group has it's cost with the purists. what with the vr6 and 1.8t now easiy applied to a mk2 you could argue what the point would be going elsewhere. i think a mk2 running an audi ur quattro 5 pot would be and awesome thing, with or without the 4wd. The sound of the thing would be worth it alone!
