pedal depressed for bleeding brakes

Can anyone tell me why it is the official VW method for bleeding the brakes involves having the brake pedal depressed throughout the entire process?

according to what I`ve read in the past, and if you`re using a pressurised bleeder, then yes, I believe so.

jamie16v - thanks for the reply. I will be using a eeziebleed to do the job but wanted to know why it was that the official method from VW involved depressing the pedal thoughtout the process.

I`m not totally sure, but I think it has something to do with the abs pump.

bled my system also using eezibleed with pedal untouched. worked fine for me.
