Hey guys,

1st post here and new owner of a 2002 MK4 VW Golf.

Recently it has started making a good awful racket at the front left, if i hit a dip or bump in the road, it just squeeks and sounds like it needs some juice in the joints! But no idea what that could be.

2nd thing is the Emissions Workshop light, it pops up everytime i turn on the car with a loud noise.

3rd thing is an EPC light, again not a clue.

4th and final thing is an Engine Light, again i've heard this can mean many things.

I'm lost for clues. But a friend of mine said you can scan your car with a device which plugs into the area near the brake pedal or ashtray area?

One of these from Amazon: http://tinyurl.com/kfwpal5

Which would be ideal?

Thanks guys!

  • Scorpion Exhausts are delightful.
Hey buddy, welcome.

1) The racket, could be a few things. Binding break, warped discs, wheel bearing, even a bent disc cover (the metal shield that goes round the disc, no idea what it's called). I know I had a little stone stuck between the disc and the cover and it sounded like a meatloaf concert.

Jack the car up and have a proper look at the wheel. See if there is any lateral movement in the wheel. When my bearing went, the wheel literally wobbled on its hub. If you have no joy, take it to a garage and see what they find.

I own one like that, can't really fault it. Just google the code/ask for help on here.

3&4) wait and see what the scanner says. The socket for the scanner is above the little ashtray. There is a plastic cover right at the bottom on the centre console trim that comes off.

Good Luck fault finding! What spec is your Golf?
I thought Volkswagens were supposed to be reliable?

Hey thanks for the amazing reply! I've ordered the scanner that you mentioned, hopefully will give me the data i'm looking for.

It's an Automatic, 2002 VW Golf, 1.6 Petrol.

I'll lift up the front left with a jack, but i'm not sure what will look normal, or what won't. It's just such a bad squeaky noise it's almost irritating to drive. People look and watch me drive by.
