Loss of power/ throttle - Please help
« on: 19 June 2013, 11:48 »
Hello everyone, last week I purchased a mk4 1.9 gt tdi 150hp Golf with 93k miles on the clock. I have started having some issues with it and wondered if anyone might be able to suggest what could be causing the problem?

Last night while driving home about 3-4min into my journey I stopped at a set of lights. When I went to pull away the car accelerate as normal but just before I was about to change into 2nd gear when the car must have been at about 1800 revs I had total loss of acceleration as if I'd just run out of fuel, I took my foot off the throttle and then put it back on and had a little bit of power, I then changed into 2nd gear, the car accelerated for a moment but then quickly cut out again. The battery light came on and the car had lost power, the breaks didn't work properly and I came to a stop. I then tried to start the car again, it turned over a number of times then finally started, I tried to pull away but the car cut straight out again. I turned off, waited a few moments then tried to start again, it turned over a few times then started, it then drove fine and I drove the rest of the way home with no problems (about another 10min driving).

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions that would be great! Thanks in advance

Hey thanks for the reply. Do you know how much it normally costs to get a car scanned? It's a real pain as I've only just bought this damn thing. Hoping I've not bought a pile of ****

Had problems again today with cut outs when accelerating. The only thing I can relate to with the way it feels is like when I've run out of fuel in the past in other cars. One second your accelerating the next nothing. But today it came back quite quickly, I lifted my foot off the pedal then put it back and had power again.

Hey, guess this must be a common fault then. I've just ordered this from eBay: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/U281-VW-Audi-Skoda-Seat-VAG-CAN-BUS-Fault-Code-Reader-Scanner-diagnostic-tool/321143403508?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D14%26meid%3D8495412756044107037%26pid%3D100015%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D321143403508%26

ive got one of them, it didnt throw up my pressure drop between throttle valve and turbo. but when i got a vagcom cable and done it with laptop thats when i got the found the code

Hey, well I received the fault code reader I bought through eBay. I've just the scan tonight and it's only found 1 fault. 16725 (Camshaft position sensor circuit-out of range/performance). This means nothing to me lol.

I'm going to order a vagcom cable as well.

Had another problem while driving last night, same again sudden loss of throttle when accelerating like the fuel had cut out. The battery light came on and I also noticed this time that a warm came up on the dash saying "alternator workshop". It only stayed there for a second. I turned the ignition off, restarted the car and it was fine...

after my brake lights staying on ect and hearing that the brake light switch may be cause of losing power when putting foot down i decided to take the brake switch out. i dismantled it completly played about with the insides put it back in and it now works, lights stay off and come on when brake but the main thing is i now do not lose any power what so ever, so that was my problem,,, the brake switch!!!!!! taking to the ecu telling it i was braking with lights being on and cutting engine. now i have a spare one that i ordered  enjoyed seeing how it works tho,, toaster technoligy

I'm not sure of the layout of these engines so not sure if they have a dpf, if so that could be clogged. The ERG valve is what started to block up on my diesel ford and I was experiencing the same thing as you. If the brake switch doesn't fix it perhaps the EGR valve is your next best bet.
