Rev counter flicker
« on: 10 August 2005, 18:15 »
The rev counter on my MK3 1992 Gti flicks up from about 3500rpm to 4500rpm for a split second then back to normal again while crusing at 70-80mph. It does this a couple of times then is ok again for a few days. The car sometimes judders as well as if i'd stamped on the accelerator as the revs go up.

Any ideas as its not exactly ideal on the fast lane of the M1 at rush hour!

Cheers

Some of your guys must have an idea! It does it all the time now and my local garage don't have a clue why.

Rev counter moves but revs don't if this is any help?

Cheers

no expert 'm afraid - so I've checked my vw chilton manual but no troubleshooting re Rev counter either.

If its operated similar to the speedo i.e., by a cable, then this might be faulty - speedo cables on VDO instrument panels on 92-93 Golfs (not sure about GTI's) were prone to cable wear and was noticable by fluctuating needle (sometimes did'nt work at all).

Anyway, I have'ny found anything specific on REV counter problems, but could be just cable/electrical - i suppose your vw garage must have checked wiring for damage or loose connection etc ..
