DAB Radio
« on: 15 June 2013, 22:41 »
I was seriously considering buying a Merc A45 AMG (i've had a deposit down for the last 3 months) but have decided against it for the moment.  One thing I was looking forward to was having DAB - which seems to come as standard on most cars now.  I have it at home and at work - and would like it in the car.
I used to be fairly knowledgeable of the VW stereo systems, but haven't really looked at them for years now.  Is it an RCD510 and RCD310 that have DAB... but neither have NAV?

Anyway... I've got an RNS510 at the moment, and would like DAB.  I don't want to spend a fortune, so what are my options?  I would guess fitting an aftermarket DAB kit would be easiest and cheapest - but can I get one that integrates with the RNS510?  I don't want something stuck on my windscreen though.  Something that I can hide away would be best.

Any ideas?
Golf R... 3 door, DSG, Leather, Reflex Silver, Black 19" Talladega Wheels, ACC, Parking Sensors, RNS510 with Dynaudio, Reverse Camera, Luxury Pack, Cruise Control & Fiscon Bluetooth.

I had a quote for this last week actually.

The option you will see on our website requires your car to have a multi function steering wheel with a white (not red) DIS / MFD (driver information system / multi function display).
It will then operate via the steering wheel controls and display all the information on the DIS / MFD as well as the name of the DAB station on the RNS-510.
The cost for this system is £395 including installation, VAT and 3 year warranty.

Another option is to have an integrated DAB tuner which displays the information on the RNS-510 but is controlled via a separate credit card size remote control.
This option is suitable for any vehicle regardless of the multifunction steering wheel / DIS / MFD and the cost is the same as the system above.

The third option is to replace your current RNS-510 for the new RNS-510DAB which is the updated version with built-in DAB radio. This will be by far the best option as it will come with the factory DAB booster/aerials and will integrate with all the other systems in the car.
The price for this system is £1,895 including installation, VAT and 3 year warranty but you will be able to trade-in your current RNS-510 for up to £750 depending on age and condition.

I had the £395 option fitted after being initially disapointed because halfords fit the same thing a lot cheaper I'm quite happy with it

Digging up an old thread here, but I recently bought a Pure Move 2500 portable DAB radio (smaller than an iPhone, £75 from Amazon) and a £2 aux lead (50cm, male to male) and tried that tonight in my RNS510 - works fine.

The aux lead acts as an aerial but on the move tonight in heavy rain the signal was really good and didn't drop once. The aux-in doesn't work if you have an iPod connected via MDi, so that needs to be disconnected first.

Obviously it's not as good as an integrated system but it's a cheap option if you're fed up listening to 5 Live in AM.....!
