Actually, having been in this situation before I'd recommend telling them it was wrong.

Best thing to to is to go on to PEPiPOO and ask, or search on there.

If the police f*ck up then generally they can f*ck off.

Do not just bend over and take it as some are recommending.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

They cant increase your fine and they cant add points on.

I would try my best not to get points on my licence.  If theres no way out of it then pay up, but put up a fight first.

Never had points but done a driver improvement course. This was because I crashed and the investigated that I was doing 60 in a 40. I played dumb and said didnt see the signs etc. They put me on the course because I only been driving for 2 months.

6 years is very long time and you should be a experienced driver.

even if he does accept the penalty, he'll be offered the speed awareness course won't he? my first offence was 38 in a 30 and was offered the course.

He'll be sent on a speed awareness course. However if he gets caught speeding again within the next 3 years then he'll get points.

I was caught doing 34 in a 30 (slowing down from a 40 zone). I wasn't given the option of a course instead of points.
If you can do the course instead of points, do it, it's far cheaper in the long run. Any points on your licence and your insurance goes up. Thankfully points come off after 4 years.

If they've made a mistake, take it up with them before you pay out though.
