I would quite like to see the mk7 GTI against the Pug 208GTI as a rematch from the 80s

These two cars are in completely different leagues now - would be a pointless comparison

the mk2 and 205 were size wise in different segments back then the pug rival was really the 309GTI size wise but  then still got compared. The 208 is not far differnent power wise or speed to the low powered GTI. The GTI has also on regular reviews been compared to the BINI cooper S or JCW.  The 208 is more relevant than a 135I or AMG which are in a different league.

I agree with Snoopy; historically the two cars were seen as great rivals with the Golf being the bigger and better built more rounded car and the Pug being the smaller more focussed car. The 309 was the direct sales competitor for the Golf GTI but was made in Britain out of recycled bean cans and despite being more fun than a Golf to drive it was never a sales rival. The Golf and 205 were the ones to lock horns.
So I'd agree, although things have very much moved on in the 20 odd years since the two stopped competing it will be interesting (just as a magazine feature) to see how the two spiritual successors fare head to head.

Obviously the Polo GTI would be the direct rival to the 208 but nobody buys them...

If the 208 is a competitor to the Golf I'm cancelling my order

Well for most people it won't be but it very much was 20 odd years ago so will be an interesting MAGAZINE feature.
Purely to see if VW steals the driving dynamics vote back from Peugeot which is smaller and lighter.
In fact I'd like to see how the Polo GTI and Golf GTI fare back to back when specced similarly. Just out of curiosity.

All sorts of people consider all sorts of things and we have a massive choice now which people didn't have back in the day.

Autocar did a recent test of the Ford Fiesta ST v Peugeot 208 GTI v Renault Clio RS 200 Turbo, which are more its rivals and it came last by a long way.
Mk6 GTI 3dr | DSG | Tornado Red | 18" Monza 2 | LED Xenons | RNS510 | Bluetooth | Smoked LED tails | Cruise | Reversing Camera | TPMS | - now sold :(
