Who's the daddy for performance mods?
« on: 10 August 2005, 11:13 »
I know you get your Magnex, Scorpion etc. But where can you get the exhuast that built for performance? And 4-2-1 Manifolds too.

Its all well and good having a shiny twin DTM exit but does little to improve performance. Im after something thats built for performance for my Golf.

Just a request really for the manufactors for performance parts. Manifold, exhaust, cams etc etc

 Thanks in advance!

Awesome do 4-2-1 manifolds. As for performance exhausts your always best getting one custom made by _________ . Fill in the gaps people cos i cant remember the name of the company.

I hope you don't mean powerflow   yes they look good, and sound good.. you can have them tailor made but they're by no means a top performer. Properly designed and flow tested exhausts with quality fabrication (not knocking powerflow here.. but a bloke welding bits of pipe together is no match for lazer tig welding done by computer) are the way to go. They're bloody expensive but worth it if you're after squeezing every drop out of your motor. I'm sure noone will be suprised to hear me recommend Milltek yet again

As for cams, Kent are good... but again you get what you pay for, and IMO "Schrick" are the daddy in that area  Infact anything made my Schrick is pretty much the dogs danglies.

i agree with milltek, i use a milltek corrado g60 downpipe with my exhaust manifold proted to match, then milltek centre sections mated up to speedtech rear boxes, but chances are i'll go for the remaining milltek system when money is less tight. i've heard of so many stainless 4-2-1 manifolds cracking, which is why i went for the miltek option. i went for a piper cam, can't quite remember why i chose this over kent. air filters, any performance one really, k&n, jetex response, don't like the foam piper ones though.

Spending huge amounts of money on expensive exhausts dont produce a lot of performance gain. 5/10 bhp at most. Same with induction kits. (2/5 bhp) Cams are only worth doing if you go for a stage 2 or 3 head gas flowed. Changing cams without doing the rest will give you a drop in performance!!!!

If you want real performance then take a look at TSR or some other true performance company with a good reputation.
But be prepared to hit your bank balance!

i know what your saying len but you have to get your car breathing in and out as best as you can, so although you'll get minimal gains you'll need these doing before any kind of head work. i ran my cam for about 2 years before getting my head done and it certainly gave me performance gains, but then i already had my exhaust and filter before i did that. i've only gone for the downpipe, manifold option now my head is ported and everything else is as good as its ever going to be......

All good comments, but with the Golf my plan is.

Nice exhaust system with a 4-2-1

Rebuilt engine with P&P, Cam, Big Valves, Rebore 1.9, Oversized pistons.

Seen these and the price imo is pretty resonable.

This year i will only be able to afford. All the breathing bits, alloys, suspension.

Early next year most of my debt is gone and it frees up £300 extra to save and spend on the block!

Thanks for the info and opinions peeps!

Oh I agree Joe. Someone likened a combustion engine to a very inefficient air pump and thats really what they are. The faster you get the air/fuel mixture in and out the better!

Just wanted to warn people that banging on "performance" goodies aint the real way to go.
Its a good first step is all.
