but you can take out balljoint pinch bolt and lever wishbone down and pull out hub.that way you don't disturb any track settings. I find if you take of gearbox mount then undo cv joint nut you can pull the shaft into engine bay slightly then pull down and out below front bumper. works on mk2 anyway.
Thats how I do it normally, sometimes it goes back spot on other times it can be a little out.
My old man has tracking equipment so its no bother to me

A lot of garages pop the bottom joint and rack, ive even seen them take the whole strut out
