Road noise in the MK7 vs the Scirocco?
« on: 12 June 2013, 09:41 »
Anyone that has actually driven a MK7 have any idea what the level of road noise is compared to a Scirocco 2.0TSI?

The level of Tyre roar is one of the things that really annoys me about the Scirocco on badly surfaced motorways, anyone know if the Golf handles it any better?

It's more to do with the brand of tyre fitted than the sound proofing of the car in my experience.

In your experience what brands are good/bad?

I've got Conti 3s on my mk6 and they drown out a lot of the Dynaudio and one of the main reasons I'm not bothering with that option on the mk7 is because of tyre noise.

And edit: I had Bridgestones, Dunlops (v briefly), Michelin, Pirelli and Conti 3 on my last mk6 and they were all noisy. Most were 225 40 18 and the Contis are 235 35 19.

ON my previous Golfs I have found the quietest tyres to be Michelin Exaltos & Dunlop Sportmaxx GT's

The loudest were Continental SportContact and Dunlop Sportmaxx (the older non GT ones as they got older)

I have to say the Pirelli P7 Cinturato Self-sealers on my Scirocco have not only been very good from tyre wear and wet / dry road holding, but have also been one of the quietest tyres I've had in many a year ( and I was a huge Goodyear Eagle F1 fan before that). Only under very poor road surfaces (like the concrete sections some carriageways have) do they become semi noisy, but still much quieter than many a tyre I've had.

Sorry to put this bluntly - 18" low profile tyres ARE noise. Gotta get used to it

My Scirocco sits on low profile 18" and they are very noise, especially on poor surfaces.

My hunch is that the new Mk7 will ride better as they are slightly less wide, it has an all new platform and better sound insulation.

The golf is noisier in my opinion. It's was more of a drone due to the larger cabin space, more of an echo.

Tyre noise aside, i'd expect more noise ingress via the Scirocco's frameless windows than through the Golf. I never did get my Benfield Scotswood Road test drive last Saturday because the missus got a phonecall to arrange delivery of a piece of furniture we've been waiting 5 months for (they must make the chair at the same place the GTI chairs get made, judging by the wait!). She nominated saturday morning and then buggered off out for the day with her mam, leaving me to await delivery whilst I should've been on my test drive.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

Shortly after my mk7 (eventually) arrives I'm going to bite the bullet and get a full 4 wheel alignment done, the tyres make a huge impact on road noise but it isn't helped by the poor alignment from the factory!
