Mines might be the longest and the only one involving a ferry lol......
Pick up in Gillingham for a drive back to Belfast (via Liverpool-Belfast ferry) involving M2/M25/M1/M6/M56/M53 and about 270 miles.

Make sure you pay the extra for Premium Class or the car will be on the deck and covered in salt by the time you get home

Was thinking about that but *think* on the ferry on that route the open air deck is for unaccompanied HGV trailers only and all cars on the inside lower deck - only £40 difference so was going to get it anyway to get faster disembarkation and lounge access.
Been on it once previously.

Have to say, this kind of comment is really helpful. Pete sounds like he knows what he is doing, but if it had been me I wouldn't have realised this. Love how you can get great advice on this site!

I would check that Pete, I was on the boat last September and all cars were on the top deck on both journeys, all lorries and trailers were inside along with the premium class people. My car was a mess when I got to Liverpool and had to find a jet wash.

Maybe it has changed since then

Takes me back to my 1st MK5 Golf 140TDI. Drove from Newcastle to Burnley to pick it up from Lookers (broker order), drove straight down to Southampton, got the Southampton to Le Harve ferry with the car, as soon as we got on French soil the low oil warning light came on (motorway run-in made that a car thirsty for oil and fuel). We got a load of stuff from a Hypermarket, including Port Salut cheese, thinking that the car bays were freezing so everything would be OK. The next morning I got back to my 2 day old car that stunk of French cheese - those car decks get quite hot on the overnight crossing, even if they're freezing when you're allowed back to your car. Took a month to get the new car smell back.
Whey ya bugger! It's finally arrived after an 8 month wait....

What is the correct way to 'run in' a new car nowadays anyway. So many varying opinions on it. Some say drive it like you stole it, don't rev it over 2k RPM and drive extremely slowly, don't drive at constant speeds (on the motorway).

So many different opinions at opposite ends of the scale! I'm guessing sport mode is off limits for a while as that will hit the red line and can't be healthy for a new car?

I'm trying to create my journey around what's best for the car really.

Just use a bit of common sense really. use it but don't abuse it. avoid constant revs for prolonged periods for the first 500 miles and then drive as normal.
