Not necessarily, bu the chances are at that age it is genuine, but the only 100% way of knowing is by the hazard light switch. As said before, there were still a few unregistered small bumper cars floating around long after the big bumpers were introduced.

Even if it is genuine BB, check you don't have cheapo after market bumpers the brackets are less than rubbish and they generally don't fit too well.
I've often found them to be bodged onto the wings with bolts and self tappers

small bumpers everytime. much nicer look that's in proportion to the rest of the car. got a jade green 87gti and a medium blue 90gti. much rather the small bumper 1. shame its home to a couple of families of tinworm here and there.
