Bottom end Rebuild.....

Hi Guys


Well ive got me 2L bottom end for my 1.8 8v.. the 2L engine has done 94k so I was thinking about rebuilding the bottom end. Eg, new bearings, rings etc.

Just after a little advice as to how hard this is, is it worth getting a pro machanic to do it. any step by step guides.. ETC...

its not hard, just do things logicaly and don't go wading in pulling stuff apart. i don't think it'll cost too much to pay someone to do it as its pretty simple. the reason it costs alot to rebuild a normal engine is they have to spend ages rmoving it to work on it. as your is out thats the hard part done.

Don't do it.  It's just be run in nicely at this mileage.  Drop the sump - if it's full of tar (i.e. no regular oil changes/decent oil) then maybe consider a rebuild.  But if it just looks oily and black in there (most likely), leave well alone.  If you want a car that needs its engine rebuilding every 100k, buy an MGB.

All i'm thinking is.... Ive got this lump out of the car, and in a position its easy to work on. Not sure on cost of parts yet but they cant be too expensive, surely it must be worth while doing a rebuild when its in this state.

i am also thinking of replacing the clutch also. with a performance one, well fast road. Not sure of implications of using the mk3 ADY bottom end and the PB gear box. apparently they bolt straight on so i'm guessing it doesnt matter what clutch i use. Did think about getting a new gearbox, either a 16v one, or something which would improve things..

Any advice welcome!!!

Well it might be tempting, but if the engine was/is in good condition I wouldn't bother, but that's cos I'm lazy! :grin:
Have a read through the engine sections of the Haynes and/or Bentley to give you an idea of what you need to check & the tools you're going to need.

While the engine is out I'd at least take the sump off and have a look at the oil pump & pickup, probably worth just replacing it unless everything is ok :)
