Will anyone be buying Gap Insurance for their GTi/GTD

Does anyone intend buying gap insurance?
I am not sure if its needed if your standard car policy provides new for old cover as opposed to market value. Any advice appreciated!

If I do it won't be from the dealer, cost's about 80% less elsewhere. Also, I think there may be a thread on this already.

Getting mine for nowt, as is mcmaddy and my dad from Sunderland Pulman. Wouldn't pay £350/400 for it though. In first year of ownership some of the bigger insurance companies will replace new for old on write-off or non-recovered stolen, but years 2 and 3 would require GAP insurance of you want a new one and not current market value at point of incident.

It's worth imo especially with a GTI which may potentially be a target for some unsavoury sorts.

If your car gets nicked in the first three years or written off then your guaranteed to get the difference between the market value at the time and the price you paid for the car.

This sums its up perfectly.  Preliminary quote from VW for mine is £500 - if they can match the above quote (which i believe is exactly the same cover ie. return to invoice) then I'll go with them.  If not, I'll got with Ala.

It is a MUST however - if some ar7ehole smashes into your car you'll get full price back and not the insurance companies valuation.  IMO is as important as having tyres!

You can have it delayed a year if you have new for old in the standard policy, that way you basically get 4 years cover.

There is a better version, name escapes me, which covers you for full new replacement.  So if you got a big discount but can't get it again or the price went up you are still covered.

Even without it I would argue the toss for a true value on the car e.g. at 2 years old it gets written off and you can buy a 2 year old one on the forecourt for £20k, I would fight tooth and nail to get that £20k and not £17k or whatever they offer you at first. Getting £26k back for potentially a 3 year old car puts you in a better position than before the crash/theft etc. It's by no means a necessity but it's easier than fighting for a realistic payout should the worst happen. I've never bought it, but been given it twice on the last 2 cars.

Do you think you can do that?  I mean, if you've ordered a car already your not going to cancel if they refuse free GAP and they know it so surely they'll just say no?

I'm considering extended warranty, GAP and service plan... Is there some technique that might get one of these for free or discounted?  Cause that would be good.  Mighty expensive for all three otherwise if I decide I wanted the lot.
