Hot golf

My girlfriend who borrowed my car today brought it back saying it had a burning smell....went out and the car temp was hot by this I mean I opened the bonnet and the thing was about to overheat badly, opened the cap on the header tank (slowly) and it started to gush.Fan wasn't going so my immediate thought is it must be the fan switch in  the rad shorted the switch and the fan spins.......but the temp gauge on the dashboard through all of this was just sat in the middle (needle pointing straight up) don't understand any thoughts?????apart from don't lend her your car again (97 16v)

Changed the water pump about 5 months ago would that explain the temp gauge only showing half?

are the hoses to rad both getting hot?

also check the temp sender. could be off...

but would be weird for that and fan switch in radiator both going wrong at the same time. fan should come on regardless of what temp sender for ecu/dash senses.

Just been out to the car the top hose is a lot hotter than the bottom one is this a naffed water pump indicator??

is the water pump running the right way round?? you can put it the wrong way round on the 1.8/2.0 mk3 engines (incl the 16v 2.0)

which side of the belt drives the pump pulley?

The grooved side of the belt is running in the grooves on the pump pulley dont think its this the cars been running tip top until today just dont understand why the fan didnt cut in as the switch is in the top of the rad?

Took car out for little spin this morning and when I got back bottom hose cold top hose hot, the heater is working which leads me to believe the water pump is working so think the thermostat is buggered just bought one so will have to see

not necessarily thermostat, if thermostat is broken it would go well over 90. unless the temp sender is broken.... measure it!

Temp sender is another days worry am going to change the thermostat tomorrow been a while since i did the water pump so can remember but can the thermostat be changed without removing the pump know its in a plastic housing but can't recall if you can change it in situ.........anyone remember its a 2.0abf
