So much for main dealer fitting
« on: 08 August 2005, 15:28 »
Nearly two weeks ago I decided to bite the bullet and have a full standard exhaust (cat-back) fitted to my GTi. The old one was a poor quality pattern one and was full of holes. I did consider going for a stainless steel one, but didn't want to bump up my insurance premium with another mod. and some aftermarket systems don't fit properly :undecided:.

So off I toddle down to my local VW dealer knowing that although this was not a cheap option, I could be fairly safe in the knowledge that it would fit, be fitted correctly, and probably be of much better quality than one from a local tyre & exhaust center.

Was I wrong or what? .

I noticed a bit of a rattle on the way home, but thought it was settling down. Drove to Cornwall and it banged, rattled and squeaked all the way there, especially under hard acceleration or up hill. Phoned the dealer when i got to Cornwall and arranged for it to be looked at today.............bang, squeak, rattle..................all the way back to Felixstowe .

Took it up this morning, an hour later they claim to have fixed the problem................bang, squeak, rattle.........all the way home. Rang them up again, quite p***ed off by now. Taking it back up tomorrow .

Honestly, you'd think a main dealer of all places could fit an exhaust properly!

Well if they don't sort it out properly tomorrow morning, they can have the whole exhaust back and I'll be wanting a refund. After I've had another one fitted elsewhere and that one removed and returned of course .........hypothetically speaking that is .

I personlly would complain to VW head office, they dont like their name tarnished by some pikey vw garage messing public cars up, something would be done about it.

Went back this morning. Asked to speak to the fitter, which I did and went for a test drive. Sods law, after a quick drive up the road and back it didn't make a sound , but it was rattling when I went up there.

Anyway, fitter says he'd get it on the ramp and have another look, in a resigned sort of way . I go back in the showroom and I'm met by who I assume to be the workshop manager, he seemed more helpful and actually seemed to listen to what I was saying - "It's OK for about the first ten minutes of driving, then when it gets warmed up and I'm changing gear it gets noisy" -  starting to wonder how many more times I was going to have to repeat this .

Ten minutes later workshop manager appears and says he wants to show me something. Turns out the gear box mount is knackered, subsequent movement when changing gear and under hard acceleration is causing it to move about. I had suspected something like this, but it hadn't been making that noise with the old exhaust on so I put it down to the way it had been fitted.

So fair enough that needs replacing, and they adjusted the rear box a bit more a bit more. But you'd have thought they'd checked up on that the first time I went back . It also appears that the fitter was meant to road test it and didn't bother , the workshop manager did today.

It seems rattle free now and I went GSF and got a gearbox mount, just got to get it fitted now.

I personally would complain to VW head office, they dont like their name tarnished by some pikey vw garage messing public cars up, something would be done about it.

Believe me mate, I was on the verge of doing just that .

Well maybe a bit older and less spotty
