Anyone know how much of a difference it makes to 0-60 or MPG?  I'm imagining its minimal since it can't weight all that much can it?  Surely plonking a passenger in the car would have, I don't know, double the effect?

EDIT:
In before anyone says "that depends on how fat the passenger is!"

It'll be negligible of course, depending more on passengers and how you drive!  For me the decision would be purely monetary, but then I'm not bothered about having the interior flooded with light.  If I wanted sun, I'd get a convertible!

My wife wants a convertible.  We had a convertible GT as a hire car in Switzerland and she kept posing for photos in it, haha.  I assured her that unfortunately the GTI does not come in a convertible version.  By the time I found out that you can get a GTI convertible, or an R for that matter, it was too late (fortunately!).

I'm still mystified as to why you can though.  If you make a hot hatch a convertible all you've done is take away the "hatch" part.  Isn't that just a cheap SLK?  Seems odd to me.

Sunroof has never bothered me, it's not as if you look up and out of it. The black headlining of the GTD/GTI isn't going to look that much lighter with a sunroof in. An easy grand not to spend for me.

The missus is now looking considering nearly new Beetle convertible (new shape) as well as A1 for her car if she ever learns to drive. She has been looking them over at every VW dealership visit made lately and I told her she can't have a new one as residuals are pretty poor on them for a VW (GFV = 36% ). Makes a much better nearly new buy.

I think you should try and dissuade her from the Beetle because as you say the residuals are poor and reviews are not too hot either. The A1 will hold it's value far better and imo it's a far nicer car.

I don't mind poor residuals if i'm buying 2nd hand and someone else has already lost 25% of the sticker price. Bad reviews? Maybe down to being built in Mexico? I wonder whether it just missed out on being MQB platform.

A1 residuals don't look amazing if GFV is anything to go by (same as an average Golf - 47%, not a patch on a GTI/GTD), or maybe Audi are just being ultra cautious with their GFV.

I'm maybe biased because I have one in the household but I would get her to consider the Mini Cooper as well. Cracking little car

I did suggest a mini, a proper mini mind, not one of these fat mini, estate mini "countryman" or slopey 1/2 roof coupe mini. She's not keen on a mini. Not sure how the residuals are on those now there are so many out there used beyond the dealership network - you usually get the best resale for all cars as one of the first sellers when there are hardly any used exaples out there. I got 81% of list price back for my first scirocco at 2 years old - hard to beat, current Roc looking to retain 64% at just over 2 years old (27 months) come swapover time for GTD (not as good now there are more out there).

I was very anti mini, my mrs was always saying she wanted one. Took a test drive and I did a full 180 about turn, cracking little cars and so much fun to drive. She has the Cooper 1.6 petrol  and it's brilliant, just the right amount of power to be able to use most of it without getting too silly. Handling is so much fun too.

Cancelled GTI, M135i beast mode.

I had the second generation R56 Cooper (58 plate).  I found it a bit underpowered (120hp), though the handling was great.  It was a lot tubbier than the first-generation one I had (52 plate) and the ergonomics inside were awful (especially the automatic A/C).  Mine was particularly unreliable, which has put me off Minis for life (so I went back to Golfs - much happier).

The non-hatchback Minis are uniformly awful - Coupe, Countryman, Paceman, Clubman.  The Countryman is almost as hideous as the BMW X5.  Whoever heard of a Mini with five doors?

The A1 is a nice car, especially in white.

Jules: It wouldn't be a white one, the mssus is not a fan of white, and I think the A1's white is a creamy white. There is a lovely S-line 1.4TSI in Grey (Daytona Pearl Grey I think) parked up at Aldi every time we go (must be the managers car). Those s-line sports seats look amazing.
