Simple question. Why the premium price tag for Oryx over Pure?

Cos they can? I can't think of any logical reason.

My Dad bought a new Focus last year and also opted for a "special" paint, a metallic red, costing double regular metallics, which Ford used in all their marketing campaigns for the new Focus. VW have also used Oryx in all their ads, so maybe that's something to do with it.

Good question. You got to think about the costs of maintaining it as well if later on you needed a respray.

It's got powdered unicorn horn in it for the Pearl effect.

Excluding any ridiculously priced raw materials ro a different way of spraying, perhaps the constructed bodyshell is painted at another factory and shipped back over to the assembly factory in the same way as "Audi select" colours are (which cost an arm and a leg). If this was the case i'd expect Oryx adopters to be facing longer waiting than those with standard factory colours.

When I totted up paint choices and pricing for different European markets I was given the impression that they charge whatever the market will bear.

Portugal pay 333 Euros for metallic paint, others pay up to 525 Euros and in the UK we're now paying £525.. In some markets pure white is free, whereas in others it's chargeable - same story with Urano Grey, solid black and Tornado Red - every market is different.

As already said, because they can and because white is a popular colour now.  By artificially elevating the price of Oryx White to a premium status, it makes the cheaper Pure White seem like a relative bargain (despite their flat white being free before).  Of those who want a white car, some will go for Oryx, but most will go for Pure.  Win-win for VW.

Personally, while I like the fact that Oryx is closer to Candy from a distance, I don't like the pearl and shimmer-effect up-close.  OK, I haven't seen a full car dressed in it, but I've seen other makes with similar pearl white, and it gives it a bit of a feminine look if you ask me!

I think it is down to demand and supply.
More and more people like white, so let's put the price up and make some money out of it.
I have seen a car in oryx white and it did look very good.
Would I pay £900 for it..... No

Well I've gone for Oryx, flat white needs a bit of pop and sparkle IMO, but I had a pearl white Merc recently too and I'm well happy with my feminine side! Does my bum look fat in this miniskirt?

Pearl paint costs more to make, it's a fact. My friend runs a car restoration business and some of the special paints like pearl cost hugely more than a standard paint to buy. As someone else said, it may be finished by a different shop so there is additional labour to consider as well.

Tell you what, I'd love to see a side-by-side photo for comparison. (Anyone good in Photoshop?)

Personally I like the Oryx White, and I'm not ar$ed about it looking feminine, but I just couldn't part with £900 for it.

Each to their own eh
