Odd coolant temp readings
« on: 08 August 2005, 13:10 »
My driver sits on 90 degrees when stationary but on a run will sit at, below or just above 70 degrees. Is this right?

Don't see why not. When you're still there's no airflow to the engine. When you're moving, it's got plenty of air to blow through!.

My 16v sticks at 90c in traffic or when running, fan cuts in very quick to keep the temp down

I understand why this happens, just wondering if it should. Thermostat stuck open perhaps?

Yup.. upon startup it takes about a mile/few minutes for the needle to move at all, then it moves to 70 or 90 depending upon whether its had much load.

Yup mines does too...

I have never seen mine rise above 90 to be honest

I have.. but I had a coolant leak at the time  :embarassed: the car self protects once its spurting coolant out and pressure drops.. heh

Funny you should mention coolant temp readings, I noticed the other day that mine reads 70 all the time, both stopped and on the move , never had a problem with it over-heating though.

My coolant , after initial warm up period , sticks at ninety .

Engine oil quivers between 90 and 102 , dependant on the heavyness of my right foot

My Driver seems to be losing coolent and I don't know where from.  Have to top it up every 2 weeks!!  It did it a while ago but stopped when I changed to expansion tank cap but the problem is back again and this time it isn't coming from the cap.  There is no nasty stuff in the oil so I don't think its the head gasket.  There are no visable sign at all.  Any ideas out there?
