Power steering woes
« on: 22 May 2013, 15:33 »
Hi All,

Hopefully someone will be able to help.

I am running a 1991 Mk2 8v GTi with a 20vt and mk4 power steering pump.

Recently the power steering has been getting very noisy when the engine is hot, whining like a supercharger, so it I am guessing it is probably due a fluid change.

Now here is the dilemma.
I have a reservoir with a Red cap and it says to use ATF fluid, however, since I have owned it (many years), it has always had green fluid in the system.
Should I drain the system replace the seals and switch over to Red or simply continue to use Green?
There are a few wet patches around in joints around the pump but the rack itself seems fine on green.
I am not sure if using the Green fluid is the cause of the whine in the first place and this might continue to get worse?

Thanks

Matt

If your fluid levels are ok then the whine is due to air in the system. When the whine occurs try turning the wheel till the system is bled again. I found that the LP hose from the reservoir to pump had perished on the corner and was allowing air into the system. When an air bubble enters the pump you get the whine and it will not stop until you force more fluid through by going full lock a few times.
