I dont want to wait and wait and wait and oh wait some more for the gtd to come and then a) anything be wrong with it, b) for it to be a big disappointment or c) something happen to my current car which scuppers the deal altogether.

mcmaddy, have they started shipping Leon's with the GTD engine yet?  The last I heard they were saying "summer".  It would be interesting the hear if Seat have got their act in any more order than VW when it comes to producing cars.  I understand your frustration with VW, but value of the Leon's saving quickly disappears when you end up with a less desirable car that depreciates quickly.

I was waiting on my Leon dealer confirming the 184 FR model but he ending up telling me that October would be the earliest 'Order date', not even a delivery date. So I went and ordered the GTD instead.

I really do suspect the new engine that they share has been the hold up. And now the Golf is getting first dibs.

Keep in mind the Leon FR 184 has been reviewed since way back in December 2012!!

The whole thing is nuts!! They tried to fob me off with the 150bhp saying it was 'not much of a difference'! Yeah right lol

It's pointless getting the diesel Leon FR - the petrol 1.8 equivalent gives exactly the same consumption as the diesel Leon and speedwise (0-60 in 7.5 secs) its the same as the GTD (ok, the GTD wins on fuel consumption but you never get manufacturers stated mpg).  The petrol Leon is more desirable than its diesel counterpart so that's the one to go for IMO.

Oh yes! And I did not even mention the lack of multi-link rear suspension on the 150 Bhp model! (That is for the 180+ Bhp models only)

So about a second slower and no rear multi-link suspension...... no difference really then lol.

Oh and the GTD is band B like the Leon 150, not Band C as is the 184. Win Win for the Golf.

VW dealers will be loving the cancelled orders as it just gives them the opportunity to order the cars into stock at a premium price. The captive orders they already had will just sit on the back burner same as now.
The only way VW will take any notice is if there is a mass boycott and people order other marques. That's not going to happen right now and they know it. They can afford their Teutonic arrogance right now. Any drop in UK sales will just enable them to concentrate on other more economical markets (LHD ones!).

As for the SEAT, an excellent choice and those that doubt the cache of the Diesel FR's will be blissfully unaware of the cult following FR TDIs have and the fact that they actually have very low depreciation in £££ terms compared to other SEATs and generally a lot of cars.
The 1.8 TSI may match or better it on paper but it won't have the same satisfying grunt.

I still have this nagging doubt that the soon to be revealed Cupra will just be a much better car than the GTI (with the bland dashboard being the only drawback). The just announced Octavia vRS looks awesome but is just too big for my purposes.

Hate the Seat badge! and even had some badge snobbery coming from Audi to VW to overcome and all quite perverse when all in VAG stable, but it's there so admitting it -

That said quite like the Leon and the new Cupra coming looks pretty decent though if it was head to head with FR I would likely go for the Octavia vRS as do like it

Many things make up my car choice and the car I choose does not have to be the fastest or cheaper or more expensive even to fit what I am looking for and things like badge do apply in that thinking and yes over rationale of maybe a car being near the same.

I would not say I would never have a Seat or Skoda as they come a long way and they might even go beyond, but as we stand today it was only even Audi or VW nothing else considered and could have selected from pretty much most manufacturers - My gut instinct is that I am going to love this GTD the more I drive it and feel very good about my choice as I look across at other drivers :)
