Rear suspension problems!

Hellooo!

Okay so picked up my first golf last thursday. a MK4 gti 1.8

had some loud banging from the rear suspension so i had a look and the passenger side rear shocker was covered in oil! so i jacked the old gal up and had a look and concluded it was knackard.

bought two new rear shocks and fitted them - now i have two problems..there is still banging when i go over bumps and one side of the car is 15mm lower than the other! the shocks were exactly the same and just stock replacements.

so now abit stuck! im going to replace the shock dampers (the rubber bump stop things that slot into the rear mounting) tomorrow and see if that makes any difference.

any ideas what this problem could be? i.e. springs too soft?
wrong shocks?

any help is appreciated as im a golf newbie! cheers!

Knocking and not sitting level screams broken spring to me but I'd assume you'd have noticed that when you changed the shocks.

Did you change the top mounts for new ones?

Rear axle bushes could also be the cause.

i thought broken spring, but jacked it up earlier and they didnt seem broken.

no, didnt replace the mounts because they looked in decent condition.

where are the rear axle bushes? i had a look at (excuse the lack of knowledge) subframe bushes? the ones that the rear assembly roll on - and they looked okay and felt okay.

i dont mind spending the cash to get the car right, just need to know what to buy

Assembly problem maybe ? recheck and make sure both have been put together the same.

Ill check tomorrow after work but ill do some tinkering and see what I come up with

I'd put money on the rear beam bushes when they go the cars clunk over humps! Not the easiest of jobs but can be done at home. Look in the maintenance section.
