Flickr - nasty changes
« on: 20 May 2013, 23:09 »
Just in case you've not checked in on Flickr in the last hour.
It's all changed. Lots of black and big images filling the screen, just right for iPads, but terrible to navigate.

Check your homepage out www.flickr.com

then add to the comments on the flickr forums.

Oh and for those with Pro accounts, that's all changing too:

What’s the difference between a Free, Ad Free, and Doublr account?

There are three kinds of accounts to choose from at Flickr, and all of them are awesome in their own way.

Free:

1 Terabyte of photo and video storage
Upload photos of up to 200MB per photo
Upload 1080p HD videos of up to 1GB each
Video playback of up to 3 minutes each
Upload and download in full original quality
Ad Free:

$49.99 per year
All the benefits of a free account
No ads in your browsing experience
Doublr:

$499.99 per year
2 Terabytes of photo and video space
All the benefits of a free account

So for $500 per YEAR, the only benefits you have are no ads and 2TB instead of 1TB.

It was slow as hell last night, although that might be to do with the world going to have a look at the changes.

Guess someone in Yahoo figured they'd rather get the ad revenue in than have Pro accounts. Screw what the subscription users want - it's all about the money, honey.

I'm undecided about the design for the moment.  If after a couple of months I hate it, then it's a fail.  To be fair it's a bit different to Facebook where it's a free service - this is something I actually put my hand in my pocket and pay for.  If they f*ck about with it I have a right to get p*ssed about it.

Give it a while to bed in.
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

Definitely. It's the only web service I pay for too. I have certain expectations as a paying customer.

Here's a comparison of old and new flickr account features

And a better article about what the changes mean to Pro account users, here

The problem is, if you do decide to jump ship, there isn't really an equivalent competitor. Sure there are photo hosting sites, but none that have the community/group aspects.

I'm hoping that they might give the option to rearrange the layout on the frontpage so that you're not assaulted by other people's photos.

We will have to give it a little while to see if Flickr listen to their users and if we get used to it.

If you already have a Pro account, you can keep it and renew it for the same price as before. But there are exceptions, if you were given a Pro account as a gift.
There are no more new Pro accounts now, so it's either a free account, a $49 p/a or $499 p/a.

I like having no ads and I want my stats. So as long as I either get used to the new layout or they let you modify it in some way, I'll probably be keeping my Pro subscription.

I can live with the ads and the layout but my connection is sh*te so loading higher res images by default is not ideal at all.

If you are already a Pro account users, you won't need to.
