Service parts - Advice needed
« on: 20 May 2013, 22:37 »
Hi,
After a couple of years of trying (wasn't the plan to leave it in there that long but sometimes you have no choice) I’ve finally got a chance to get my Golf out of the garage.
Before I use it, all it needs is a decent service & a timing belt for good measure.  Now what I'm after is where to get parts from.

Back in the day (15 odd years ago) when I used to run a Golf 1.8GL as my daily I just went to GSF, or Autocavan as it was then (giving age away slightly) for whatever I needed.  The only bits I ever had any problems with quality wise were rear wheel bearings & rocker cover gaskets.

Basically I need (for my 1991 8v GTi):

Power steering belt
Fan Belt
Oil Filter
Air Filter
Fuel Filter
Timing belt kit
Plugs
Plug Leads
Power steering fluid
Rocker Cover gasket
Coolant

On their website GSF don’t really mention brands but just state ‘premium’.  Euro Car Parts on the other hand do have some brands but not necessarily ones I’ve heard of (i.e. timing belt kit by SKF).

Any recommendations for suppliers/brands would be welcome.  Also I’d appreciate it if anyone could give me rough prices for the above from a main dealer.  (the OCD in me would like original parts as long they aren’t silly expensive).
Thanks
Sukhi

id go TPS or VW. most places ive looked on the internet havent been much cheeper for a part that may not be as good quality.

or if you or someone you know has a trade account get them to get the parts from paiges... if you talk to them you might be able to blag it and get parts your self.

Power steering belt Genuine - o.e are dayco/continental/gates
Fan Belt Genuine - o.e are dayco/continental/gates
Oil Filter - Genuine - o.e are mann & hummel/fiaam/hengst
Air Filter - Genuine - o.e are mann & hummel/fiaam/hengst
Fuel Filter - GSF ones are OK - o.e are mann & hummel/
Timing belt kit - Genuine -made by dayco/continental/gates
Plugs - Bosch Or NGK from GSF - o.e are beru/ngk/bosch

all the makes are what good motor factors, gsf, ecp etc will sell and all are o.e suppliers (the list given is only a small representation of brands which supply vw as o.e....) if you can get tps discount and the prices are similar to some of the brands listed above, then yes go genuine otherwise gsf/ecp etc sell the same stuff for that bit less

I use a mix of quality brands (inc tps if they have an offer on although my local won't give me any trader discount!)

Thanks all.

Will try & get it back on the road in the next couple of weeks or so.

TPS in Coventry will do retail so hopefully get some decent prices from them.

You don't need leads unless they are damaged and don't work.

Euro parts stuff is fine. GSF sell crap bits from experience.

No issues with continental belt kits from Euro.

Still think that genuine oil filter only talk is a bit extreme. Fitted plenty of aftermarket oil filters and never had an issue. GSF, Euro parts, Halfords etc.

Agreed Mr Blue, back in the day I just used whatever I could get hold of & generally whatever was the cheapest.....and never had issues....Think I'm just being fussy in my old age.....but not to the extent that I'd pay over the odds.

Ended up getting everything I needed from TPS....
